Has anyone made this with rayon challis? I have some printed rayon and not sure this would work with the pattern. I’ve made several before in cotton/linen/corduroy, but this challis is lovely with a border print.

  • Has anyone tried a back pleat on the gelato dress to add more room for underarms and back? I recently saw a tailor do this for Indian style tunics when they want to add more ease without altering the style lines?

  • Ava started the topic cap sleeve in the forum oliver + s: cartwheel 6 years ago

Has anyone done a cap sleeve similar to the terrace dress on this cartwheel dress? My preteen would prefer a small sleeve (no bare underarms) any tutorial on adding it to the terrace dress. I love the last blog post about it being double sided but we great if I could manage it with some cap sleeves also.

  • I usually don’t have any issue in RTW of forward shoulder or even square shoulder but when I made my muslim of the gallery tunic the shoulder line was back about 1/2 inch almost up to inch of the neck line). I know I can make the adjustment but I’m wondering is that a style issue where it sits back some?

Also the mandarin collar (view B) is too…[Read more]

  • Has anyone had an issue with the front yoke splitting down the center front. I’ve had this happen twice now. One was about two years old and out of the wash it split all the way. The second was 2 weeks into wear and when DS was pulling over her head (probably didn’t open enough buttons) it slit about 4 inches. I was able to mend that one. The did…[Read more]

  • If you want to make a blouse similar to the butterfly blouse style, do you just extend the bodice more into an A line from the building block book? I see there is a option to change the back to one similar to the butterfly blouse. Hoping to do a blouse with a bell sleeve, just want to get an idea of the proportions of the blouse compared to the…[Read more]

  • On page 20 they show the variation E dress. But in the description is says ” closures/lining: lined bodice with front bottoms..”

so I’m assuming the lining is only part of the shaped neckline correct. Its not that there is lining past the darker blue neckline?

I want to make this with short sleeves and skip the princess seams and just do the…[Read more]

  • Thanks for all the tips and info in the book. It took forever with the cutting the pieces (probably not best idea to make my first fully lined invisible zip dress with rayon challis (both layers))

But looks great. I think a woven with more body for the next version will go incredibly fast.

  • Aah OK thanks Liesl. So you do sometimes finish the outer fabric seams also in lined garments?

  • So in the homestretch of the lined zipper dress. On page 145 top #6 it says to finish the lining seam allowances. But won’t these be sandwiched inside the outer fabric and lining so won’t be showing. So I’m assuming it was the same as the lined bodice where we don’t finish the seam allowance?

I didn’t get the impression that we were finishing…[Read more]

  • Where do you purchase the poly/cotton poplin is it something that can be found in Joanns at least for initial use?

  • If anyone has any pic of the underside of the dress construction please share. I’ve seen a blog about adding the lawn and crimoline (tulle type) but its hard to visualize the stitching without seeing the inside of the dress.

  • OK I see it now. I’ve cut out the pattern pieces so I think it will make more sense. Yes I did think about the Fairy Tale Dress but thought since I had the book, let me try as many variations as I can with this.

I’m going to bypass the tulle for now and just try a simpler version with a rayonny drapy material I picked up.

I’ll have to check if…[Read more]

  • I’m hoping to do a dress similar to the one on page 142 (want to get a ballgown feel and put lining and tulle inside) but I’m not clear where it tells you how to attache the skirt lining? Its clear for the bodice but hard to understand about the skirt?

Are there any additional tutorial about this? Want to do the zipper and all.

both the skylines5 and brother innovis 700 really have all the same feet, maybe the brother has a few more that I don’t even use. but the janome is more expensive which not sure if that price difference will justify a better machine.

when you call stores that sell both get mixed suggestions. some say janome better quality, others say brother…[Read more]

Yes I do plan on buying for a dealer/shop. Problem is the shops here only carry 2 brands. So its a bit of driving all over and even then no one carries Juki/Pfaff.

SVH dealer has a independent shop in the Joanns here will check that out. Janome is an entirely different shop and the shop has horrible service and so pushy, maybe a different…[Read more]

OK outgrown my 15 year old basic singer 5817. I do a lot of garment sewing (maybe a garment a week) and now getting into quilting (mostly random blocks and incorporating into pouches/totes) but hoping to make 5 bed quilts this year.

Must haves (that I don’t have now)
    one step buttonhole feature
    needle down position
    ability to lower feed…[Read more]
