Why would we recommend a spring dress to somebody who’s specifically said she’s concerned about getting cold? That would be so weird? Apologies if you were asking for Irish spring wedding and I misunderstood! I was replying to mcholley — different circumstances, different person, different needs.

Haha, all right, now we’re talking! I think I still have the selvedge from some Armani cashmere coating around here somewhere. Like Nicole said, the only thing worse at that price than buying too much is buying too little. Cashmere coat with the grain going the wrong way on the collar because I tried to be clever — now that would not be cute.…[Read more]

What on earth are you guys sewing with that a third of a yard is so high-stakes? If somebody has a line to cashmere and is holding out I’m going to be furious.

That is crazy interesting @Todd! I always wondered how the yardage was planned, I imagined someone cutting each size out and lining it up, glad to know it is (possibly) less time consuming than that. I love all these behind the scenes ‘secrets’ you have all been sharing lately between here and instagram. Keep ’em coming! 😉

I will put my Nana hat on and advise a fine gauge wool singlet, preferably merino.

Lucky ducks, I hope it is a good price.
I *may* have already placed an order for them (and for a sewing chum) -

Snap, I am sorting too, but just adding to/taking from tubs. I swopped my clear Ikea tubs over to smoked ones in the hope it will prevent fading.

Coating cut for Hugo’s peacoat, onto the lining.
Sarvi, the culottes would be perfect, what about a Jumprope polo top?

The only super safe way to scrimp is to lay out your pattern. The pieces are quite wide so you may well need your yardage.
I think you are looking for the McScrooge thread 🙂
I will have a look for you. -

I’m afraid I don’t know either but have run into the same issue as miss_sonja — often you need the allowance to be able fit the pieces properly. Are you looking at a solid, or something patterned? Do you have the pattern already? If you do, you could test it out (not cutting out, just laying down the pieces) against another fabric of the same width.

@mcholley1 we’ll be sewing twins this week, I just cut out a skirt and top in chambray (linen, does that still count as chambray? it’s a red/white crossweave) and Liberty.
Say, any ideas what to sew for a golfing birthday party? I was thinking Lunchbox tee and culottes.

Sarvi replied to the topic Underlining? in the forum oliver + s: secret agent 10 years ago
I think what’s in that tutorial is effectively a lining, though I get why she’s calling it underlining, as the seams are still exposed. If you did that with flannel, it would be, as you suggest, ‘grabby’. Wonderfully cozy, certainly!
