Deanna started the topic Increasing rise as well as length? in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 9 years ago
Hello! I need assistance from those with more experience. Normally when making a pant pattern, I will go with the size that pertains to my child’s hips/waist measurements and then add a bunch of length as per instructions given on this blog. However, for my son, this means a pattern size of 2 or 3 and then adding enough length for his 6 year-old…[Read more]

Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Puppet theatre windows in the forum oliver + s: little things to sew 9 years ago
Hi Connie @totter2
Fusible web is like double sided interfacing. It’s used to stick two different fabrics together.
If you want white windows, you’d have to cut rectangles of white fabric and use fusible web to stick it down.
Thus, your windows can be whatever you want them to be.
If you don’t have fusible web, you could use fabric glue, or pins…[Read more] -

Hi all, I’m having trouble understanding the fusible web for the Windows? Does it become the white that shows in the photo? what should I do if I want the Windows to be a different fabric?

Enbee, that’s so helpful! I’ve been trying to wring information out of people who, as of yesterday, hadn’t yet figured out the vector graphics part.
I would also love to use a laser cutter for pattern pieces.
I have an appointment at a place that says they can teach me this on Friday. I have to pay them money, which doesn’t thrill me, but…[Read more]

ETA: the learning curve on the *design software* is pretty steep. People make whole (well-paid!) careers out of being proficient with Illustrator. I think once you have that talking to the machine software, the actual cutting is pretty straightforward, although my husband and his students have ruined plenty of plywood by messing up the scaling, or…[Read more]

My husband uses one at work, and I’ve toyed many times with the idea of trying it out for cutting fabric, which is my least favorite part of garment sewing.
I’m afraid I don’t even know what model my husband uses, but if yours is the kind that cuts through 1/4″ ply/acrylic/leather etc, I imagine the details are similar. For the one my husband has…[Read more]

This may be a shot in the dark, but I need to seek advice in a woman-friendly space.
I need to learn how to use a laser cutter. The model in question is a Rabbit QX-1290, if that means anything to anyone. I have access to one and I know it has potential for cutting Tyvek and leather, and I hear even fabric, and I think it could be amazing, but…[Read more]

He is expected to! But it’s open heart surgery, so he’s reeling.
The least I can do is make him some fabulous Jim-jams to reel in.

@bren5kids, thanks! I’ll wait to see the upcoming O+S jeans post, but otherwise will invest in the Small Fry pattern.

Enbee, I’ve made the Small Fry jeans in the size that they offer for free, I believe it’s 2T. I really liked them and was very pleased with how they turned out….they got worn constantly until my son outgrew them. But, as you say, they did have a low-riding pockets look, which I always figured was intentional to go with the normal skinny jean…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoHi Mimi,
Wow, I think that pattern has been out of print for a while now! Glad you found a copy.
I would suggest contacting Simplicity directly for the missing elements. They produced the pattern and will be able to tell you what to do or where to get what you need. Have fun with it!

Thanks, Lightning – I’ve read that post of yours! Very inspirational. However, given the CF I just made of shortening/waistband-adding on the FT cargoes (even if it did work out), I’d probably prefer a straight pattern, as opposed to a mash-up.

SChude replied to the topic Winter Lullaby in the forum oliver + s: lullaby 9 years ago
I just finished my first items from the lullaby pattern. everything is in cotton flannel. I added bias tape at the ankles and threaded round elastic inside. The waistband is in the contrast fabric. I have a straight stitch machine, so all pant seams are flat felled. I didn’t have snaps, so I used buttons. Last change was that I edge stitched…[Read more]
