While I am not entirely confidant about the route I took to get here, I do believe I will be able to repeat the sewing process for my customized maritime top with relative success. I attached a quick photo of the finished garment here. The bottom hem stretched a bit but overall it fits well and I do like how the darts shape the front. I lowered…[Read more]

needlewoman replied to the topic what fabrics do you use for a lining? in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 9 years ago
I use polycotton poplin for lining most of the Oliver + S patterns I make. Lightweight, sews up well, washes easily, and doesn’t wrinkle to much.

Thank you all, very much. I really appreciate the advice. LoL, S!! Nearly finished the Halloween quilt; a little more outrageous than I planned but here’s hoping the kids will like, and that it won’t make the parents physically sick.

Hello Ladies,
I was wondering if you would be able to help me.
I want to get a linen dress stitched with lining, please would you advise what kind of lining would be the best for Linen?
Thank you.
Kind Regards,
Karen

Ah, ok then. At least now I’m not thinking I’m uneven 😅
I was up early as my 8 year old and I did mass participation bike ride this morning. Great fun! -

That´s the point, it is not below the armhole… I´ve pinned the notches together and both side seams are equal from the armhole to the hem.
I will go then with it. I’ll add one or two inches in length… I have something to hide around the hips!
What a quick answer, thank you so much! I can´t even think what time is it now downunder…

…thought about it more. The difference in length is the side seam below the armhole, right? So its certainly going to have s lower back hem.

…you know I wore mine yesterday but I’m not sure where it sat at the hem. If your muslin is even at the hem and you like it then go for it.

No, the hems won’t be even, or maybe I don’t stand straight! 😃
If you pick the top up by its shoulder seams the back will hang lower. I don’t think its a forward shoulder seam, at least not by the length of the hem difference.
I love the St James knits too. I have a few of their ready to wear Mariniere tops and they last forever. -

@lightningmcstitch, one question…I have just cut the pattern and I have made a muslin (never thought before I would be doing this, but I love the st James knit I bought in Mood´s and I don´t want to mess things…)
I see that the back is longer than the front, but both hems, back and front, will be even at the end, it is the shoulder seam the o…[Read more] -

Ah, now I see what you mean. For that, you should true up using the original side seam. It will bring in your side seam by the dart by a bit, but you’ve added extra space near the front of the top so you’re still adding ease.
Or if you really need/want that extra bit at the side seam, add the equivalent amount to the side seam of the sleeve…[Read more]

@sarvi Thank you for your feedback also. Do you have an available photo of your maritime with the FBA? I was looking on the Flickr group and having a hard time finding any with the bust dart.
I am completely aware of the dropped shoulder in the design of the pattern (I have worn this style in RTW clothing) but because my shoulders are somewhat…[Read more]

@liesl Thank you, I greatly appreciate your attempts at helping me figure this out. Unfortunately the arm hole is affected by the FBA, although it is not shown to do so in the figures on your pattern. I have done FBA adjustments before (on your Lisette patterns for example) and the top of the side edge angles when the pattern pieces are spread,…[Read more]

I’m also trying to follow what’s happening, and I think the bit that’s throwing me is the bit where doing the FBA changed the size of the sleeve opening — it shouldn’t, I don’t think? Am I misremembering? I made this in both a 10 and an 8, with and without an FBA — I found in the end that although I do a 3/4″ FBA for the Cinema Dress, I liked…[Read more]

You sound very frustrated, @lotuspeachblog. Let me see what I can do to help now that I understand more about the situation.
First of all, I’m going to suggest my favorite book which I think will be very useful to you: “Fit for Real People” by Pati Palmer. She covers all sorts of fit situations for every body shape, and I think you’ll find it to…[Read more]

@liesl Well, yes it is complicated and I am pretty disappointed by this pattern. I really wanted it to be a staple piece I could make over and over for my wardrobe. But it is much harder to make work than it seems it should be. I already spent two classes with a sewing instructor making the first two muslins. She is as baffled as I am as to how to…[Read more]

The front piece is a size 12 and has a FBA which adds and additional 3/4″ to the width of that piece. The whole upper portion: armhole, sleeve and neckline I cut in a 4. But then armhole was larger than the sleeve because of the extra on the sides because of the larger size of the front. Also the size 4 sleeve was a little tight. So I increased…[Read more]
