rimoxie started the topic Trying to use parts of Baptism dress for First Communion Dress … in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 7 years ago
My daughter’s baptism dress had a long very full skirt made of a sweet cotton dot with lace at the bottom. I attached a photo. Because she was 3 when she was baptized, the skirt of the dress still fits at age 7. I really would like to use it for her First Communion dress this year, for sentimental sake, but am trying to figure out a new bodice -…[Read more]

these are two attempts… from googling (Fit for Real People is not in at my local library) it looks like I need to fix the shoulder slope more than the width to get rid of those neck-to-underarm folds, and make the neckline/collar still bigger, right? There’s also a good inch that could be taken away under the arm in the striped one. A work in…[Read more]

Help! I need some advice. I want to sew the jacket in Lisette B6169, but I’m having trouble finding fabric I like. I’m hoping for a botanical print on a light background in either twill or denim, but can’t find one. The closest I’ve found is some upholstery fabric at fabric.com, which is a medium weight 100% cotton. However, it is dry clean only,…[Read more]

There’s a tutorial with pictures here:
but generally, yes – you join the short ends first, right sides together (usually along with some folding/pressing). Then you attach the waistband to the wrong side of the shorts (wrong side of the shorts facing the RIGHT…[Read more]

I am a beginner at sewing and for the life of me I cannot make sense of the instructions on how to make the waistband. Do I join the two short ends? Can anyone recommend a video to watch on how to do the waistband?

The instructions to convert to a gathered skirt with a straight hem begin on page 74 of the book.

Hi! I would suggest doing a dirndl skirt, and just combine it with the rest of the building block parts! The dirndl skirt simply uses a rectangle piece of fabric, so you can keep the hem on the straight of grain. Here’s a tutorial: http://blog.megannielsen.com/2009/04/how-to-make-a-dirndl-skirt/
Or, even better, Leisl’s Lazy days skirt pat…[Read more]

Hi,
I’m making a building block dress. My skirt has a border print and all the skirts I can find in the book have a curved bottom edge. Any advice on how to sew it so there is a straight bottom edge without creating problems :-).

Thank you Lightning McStitch! I found that I had basted the ruffle to the facing the wrong way round ( doh!) but your post gave me confidence to go back a few steps and start again rather than just abandon the ruffle. So all is back on track!

Trust the instructions! The beauty of Oliver + S patterns is that sometimes it seems counterintuitive, but if you do as the instructions say the finish is always beautiful!
So, yes, the facing is stitched with the right side of the facing against the wrong side of the pyjama top. Just as in the illustration (below step 1 Attach The Facing).
Now…[Read more] -

I’m making the top and attaching the facing with the ruffle to the pyjama top. I’ve pinned it on but it doesn’t seem right to put the right side of the facing to the wrong side of the pj top. If I stitch it would create a raw edge on the right side. Also , in placing the facing onto the top should the ruffle be facing towards the pj or away – it…[Read more]
