  • Yeah! The shorts fitted! I just need to insert elastic now.

  • Thanks for info, Heidi. Between your advice and Nicole’s it does seem I should have asked for hip measurements. The shorts are finished now and I’m pleased with them- let’s just hope they fit! I will be arriving in Canada lunch time Thursday and can’t wait to see them all. I think there are more clothes for Rose than for me!

  • I always go by the hip rather than the waist measurement. If it helps my tall slim 5 year old niece has a waist measurement of 22.5″, Size 6, and a hip measurement of 23.5″, size 4, and is very tall, I just made her leggings the length of size 8! My nephew who is 7.5 years has a waist measurement of 24.75″ (24 3/4) a size 10 but his waist is…[Read more]

  • No, you are very helpful. I can see how difficult it is to sew for children who you don’t have access to! I will be measuring every little inch of their bodies when I am in Canada- then they will go and grow!!

  • Little ones tend to pretty up and down, even chubby ones. I would go by hip for pull on shorts *as a rule*. Sorry not to be more help.

  • Thanks for quick reply, Nicole! I asked my daughter for waist measurement, maybe I should have asked for hip? So looking at your size for Matilda I think I might cut the next size down for the boys. Its not end of world if too small- they would come in for Rose, I suppose, or if Laura has another one, she was making some mutterings …

  • *I haven’t made them yet*
Matilda is 5, her waist is 19′ and her hip is 21′, she is the height of a 4 year old. I would generally cut her a size 4 in pull on shorts.
Being pull on elastic waist type shorts I think a bit of ease would come to no harm.
BUT I have not made them and i don’t know if there is a sizing chart.
    Is this any help?
    Todd…[Read more]

  • I just had to look for myself, I have made 11 pairs of sketchbook shorts and 4 shirts and one dress made from the shirt. Hardly as many as you… 🙂
I love the shorts shortened with a cuff for my daughter’s school shorts… I see a lot of people using the pattern in many ways for girls too.

I am wearing my late lunch tunic at the moment and even though my bump is tiny compared to some (because I am only 12 weeks along), I find this top to be very comfortable. I think the print you chose would be very pretty for a maternity top. I used stretch sateen so it has a bit of stretch in it not to mention I am not a 6-8 and had to size up but…[Read more]

Well, this is number 6 for me and I am due in September. 🙂
I was thinking the Empire line would work over a belly, I may add a little more to the centre panel and gather it in.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t work as a dress, it just may end up quite full, a long tunic would be lovely and the stripes would be very flattering.
    As for underlining, you…[Read more]

I looked at the Oliver & S pattern again. I really, really like the one that’s made in a stripe. Maybe i’ll make a shirt in a striped fabric and see if she’d like it in a dress. Question on sewing with Tana Lawn. It doesn’t seem to be as sheer as I thought it would be Do you suggest underlining it?

Nicole – that’s very pretty. She’s due Nov. 28th. This is her second, so she went into maternity clothes much more quickly this time. Do you think that would work if I lengthened it and made it into a dress?

    That is very pretty.
How far along is she? I am 27 weeks and I am planning to make this http://oliverands.com/liesl-and-co-patterns/OLV-LC004LL-D.html for myself next.
