These are all great ideas, thank you! I think the patches are too big for a strap for a child (they’re about the size of my palm) but I bet if I made a messenger bag for my husband they’d work great for that.

And yes, a vest or messenger bag would be spot on, and could be used both as part of a costume and as part of more regular gear.

    Thanks!…[Read more]

  • Yes, Sarvi! A few years ago I purchased a pattern and yardage for a pair of PJ pants from a well-known pattern company that’s well respected within the industry. It was meant to be a very quick sew for my sister, who was about to be hospitalized and needed some TLC. And I could have just cried with frustration when the yardage was more than 1/2…[Read more]

  • Very well explained, Todd!

Actually, there’s one piece of the puzzle that Todd hasn’t included in his description of the process and which would certainly account for a discrepancy between the yardage chart and the minimum amount of fabric you actually need. That piece is this: I try to use one cutting layout for as many sizes as possible. I…[Read more]

  • When you sew the lining to the neck you would just need to copy the stitching line for the notched version onto the fabric- either the lining or on the reverse of the main. Then follow the rest of the directions. It should be an easy modification.

I my grungetastic youth it was quite the vogue to have an old army khaki green messenger bag with patches sewn on it so I’m with Brittney. I also think the explorer best with patches would be very cool.

What about on the LTTS messenger bag?

  • Reeni replied to the topic Ideas for using patches? in the forum off topic 10 years ago

How big are they? if you sewed them together (maybe with a strip of canvas or denim to back) they would make a cool strap for a bag or overalls, or on a work apron.
or you could put them on a pilot’s cap.

  • I made a t-shirt-like boatneck top with 3/4 sleeves, no closures or facings to conserve fabric… it was a situation where I wanted something to wear out to dinner the next night with some high school friends. It’s still very cold here in NY and the LES builds up some fierce tunnel winds! Velvet top and wool flannel pants let me enjoy fried…[Read more]

Has anybody got a good recipe for almond cookies? I’m looking for the ‘Chinese’ kind that I used to see in pink paper boxes, with a whole almond pressed into the top. Not sure how authentic they are!

Oops, looks like I missed the controversy. Hope folks were able to smooth things over! It is such fun to ‘shop’ on another person’s behalf 🙂 Johanna now I will be picturing cowboy boots in the shower, haha, though I confess I was thinking more of a low bootie in suede, with a kitten heel perhaps?

Can any of you clever folks help me think of a fun use for patches? We visited our local science center, which has a fun space exploration exhibit, and I got lured in by the great patches and bought several, like so:

The obvious uses would be on a flight style jacket or…[Read more]

  • @maraya thanks for your thoughtful response to my post.

I’m glad there are people who understand that the old adage “penny wise, pound foolish” still holds true. We want our patterns to give everyone a sewing experience from start to finish that exceeds their expectations. We know that the most important commodity in most people’s lives today is…[Read more]

Well, I think it is perfectly reasonable to suggest a spring dress in May, since it it spring in CA in May, and it is CA.
And since the wedding is indoors, it is unlikely to be cold, so a wool sweater, tights, and boots are likely unnecessary.
Wow, I thought this topic sounded fun, not controversial.

  • Thanks @georgeandizzy. I’m not sure if that’s it or not. They’ll often do a special printed display just for the brand. Has anyone else seen anything like that?

Sorry if this is really obvious to the North Americans, but why wouldn’t a red shawl work in May/spring? In Australia there aren’t really any guidelines for what colours to where at what time of year, although red and green together do say “Christmas”.
And why not tights and boots in spring if it’s still cold enough for them?
    On a 10ºC (50F) day…[Read more]

    Thank you so much ladies!

  • Hi — I feel like I’m missing something but I’m confused if I can make the notched neckline on a lined version of the bistro dress? The instructions aren’t clear to me how I go about doing that — any help is much appreciated!! Thank you in advance!
