My husband uses one at work, and I’ve toyed many times with the idea of trying it out for cutting fabric, which is my least favorite part of garment sewing.
I’m afraid I don’t even know what model my husband uses, but if yours is the kind that cuts through 1/4″ ply/acrylic/leather etc, I imagine the details are similar. For the one my husband has…[Read more]

This may be a shot in the dark, but I need to seek advice in a woman-friendly space.
I need to learn how to use a laser cutter. The model in question is a Rabbit QX-1290, if that means anything to anyone. I have access to one and I know it has potential for cutting Tyvek and leather, and I hear even fabric, and I think it could be amazing, but…[Read more]

He is expected to! But it’s open heart surgery, so he’s reeling.
The least I can do is make him some fabulous Jim-jams to reel in.

@bren5kids, thanks! I’ll wait to see the upcoming O+S jeans post, but otherwise will invest in the Small Fry pattern.

Enbee, I’ve made the Small Fry jeans in the size that they offer for free, I believe it’s 2T. I really liked them and was very pleased with how they turned out….they got worn constantly until my son outgrew them. But, as you say, they did have a low-riding pockets look, which I always figured was intentional to go with the normal skinny jean…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoHi Mimi,
Wow, I think that pattern has been out of print for a while now! Glad you found a copy.
I would suggest contacting Simplicity directly for the missing elements. They produced the pattern and will be able to tell you what to do or where to get what you need. Have fun with it!

Thanks, Lightning – I’ve read that post of yours! Very inspirational. However, given the CF I just made of shortening/waistband-adding on the FT cargoes (even if it did work out), I’d probably prefer a straight pattern, as opposed to a mash-up.

I just finished my first items from the lullaby pattern. everything is in cotton flannel. I added bias tape at the ankles and threaded round elastic inside. The waistband is in the contrast fabric. I have a straight stitch machine, so all pant seams are flat felled. I didn’t have snaps, so I used buttons. Last change was that I edge stitched…[Read more]

Hold this thought for the weekend @enbee we’ve got a blog post coming up with lots of inspiration for jeans from Oliver + S patterns!
My all time favourites were mashing the back half of the After School pattern with the front half of the Field Trip! But there are other great examples. -

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoI was so excited to find the Diplomat dress pattern 1878 at my local Joann’s. Unfortunately when I was ready to start my project I discovered the instructions were missing and to make matters worse they had no more patterns in stock. (Argh!)
Any ideas on how I can get them.

Weinie dog top is shelved until I can make a button run. None of the buttons I have match. And the ones I thought looked pretty great actually kind of clashed badly in natural light. Of course.
Nightgown is complete and on a sleeping girl. I also whipped out the barely started Seashore dress I was going to work on in January before life…[Read more]

Has anyone made the Small Fry jeans Lightning mentioned upthread? I’m looking for a pattern for my little guy, and I like everything about that one EXCEPT that for every pair I’ve seen sewn, the back yoke looks too tall, making the pockets ride really low. My guy has short legs and a big toddler potbelly, so pants already tend to ride low on him…[Read more]

I just finished my second playdate dress for the week! I will finish the last two on the weekend after I have returned from a long distance school run.
The croquet dress is still in bits btw.
The weekend has a stint of tracing and cutting patterns included in the schedule, hopefully involving my teenage daughter (seeing as the patterns are for…[Read more]
