I made a garden party out of some Nani Iro double gauze a couple of summers ago. It was wonderful.
It does fray easily, but it wasn’t horrible. Treat it gently and serge/zigzag/french seam. You don’t need to line it.Sorry, I don’t have a photo handy without the little bolero (it was early spring, so thought she needed a little more, but it…[Read more]

I have two little girls (ages 2.5 and 5 years old), and much less time to sew than I would like. I have been dreaming about sewing for them for this summer, but realistically won’t have time to do more than one outfit each. So I’m carefully consider what that should be. I’ve done a variety of the easier Oliver and S patterns (hide and seek,…[Read more]

I generally suggest starting with the chest measurement, but don’t drop more than two sized below the child’s age or the sleeves and armholes might be too small. We’ve allowed approximately 2″ of ease in the pattern, so if she’s measuring between sizes you might be safe to go down instead of up. And of course I always suggest making a muslin!

I am about to make my first Oliver and S dress for my granddaughter and I don’t know what size I should select. Measurements correspond with both size 4 and size 5. Her chest is 22 1/2, her waist is 23 and her hips are 22. She is 40 inches tall and weighs 38 1/2. She’s nearly 4 and she wears mostly size 5 in RTW. She probably won’t be wearing the…[Read more]

I’m no expert in sergers, that’s for sure! I’d suggest taking it to a service center or someone who can take a look at it. They’re quite a specialized piece of equipment, and I’m just happy when I can thread mine successfully.

@juviboston I’ve just measured my petite 8 yr old and she’s just 22inches. She’s in a 6 lengthened to a 7 at the moment and it fits very nicely.
The problem with going any smaller is you need to lengthen all the pattern pieces, not just at the skirt piece, or you would lose all the lovely proportions of this dress. -

Sewing for Yourself 8 years agoThank you for the quick answer and the link, @liesl
So, should the B6411 had been a Liesl+co pattern, my measurements would appear in size 10 instead of 16, right? And I have to draw a 16 to make the dress in my size. -

Sewing for Yourself 8 years agoI have just bought a couple of Lisette for Butterick patterns (B6464 and B6411), and I see that the sizing is different from Liesl+co patterns. The body measurements for a size 10 in the Liesl+co chart correspond to a size 16 in the Butterick envelope.
What size should I cut, 10 or 16? -

That sounds like a good plan to me! Definitely test the interfacing (which sounds like it’s amazing) before using it to see if it’s necessary, but it sounds like you’ve thought it out brilliantly.

Hi Julie @juviboston
If this young lady measures just 22 1/2″ around the chest, I would be inclined to make a size 4 and use the length of an 8 if she is within the height measurements specified for this size. It would make it far too big to make a size 6 as the amount of ease is 2 inches and it is ample.
I would measure her height to find out…[Read more]
