      Great pattern
Reviewed by Marcia ( Verified Buyer) on 02/10/2024
Have made this twice, once in a cozy twill (almost like flannel), and once in viscose shirting. Both turned out great. I particularly like the finishing details, which result in a very professional shirt. You can delete the vertical front/back darts for a less fitted outcome. Clear instructions, very good product!

Really Nice Compliment to The All Day Shirt
Reviewed by LuckeOgre ( Verified Buyer) on 09/27/2023
After attempting my first ever shirt for myself using the All Day Shirt pattern, I liked it so much that I bought this pattern as its compliment to next make a ‘patriotic’ themed shirt for my wife. The process and result was equally satisfying. The ‘sew along’ (https://oliverands.com/community/blog/2017/05/liesl-co-classic-shirt-sew-along.html) was a particularly helpful supplement to the pattern instructions.

I am very satisfied with this pattern. The instructions are detailed and accurate and I learned so many new skills that I am using for other sewing projects, particularly how to sew the yoke and collar, which I think are much cleaner than some other methods. I had to do a major broad shoulder adjustment, a bicep adjustment, and added length to the sleeves to get a perfect fit. At 5'10", the shirt length is spot on. It's so gratifying to finally have shirts that fit well and the confidence that I can make one whenever I want. I have now made two Classic Shirts and I'm planning a mashup with the Recital Shirt next (I love that the two patterns work together!)

      A Truly Perfect Pattern
Reviewed by Betsey Pitts ( Verified Buyer) on 05/16/2023
This was my first button down ever! And this was the perfect pattern to use. You can even print out ONLY the size you need from the pdfs at home - so user-friendly. I was intimidated by everything about making a buttondown, but read so many posts about this pattern and how satisfied people were. I see why. No gaping at the front, arm length is perfect. I am a 38B/36C and I flare out below the waist and button downs rarely fit. This is really perfect. I made a size 12, C-cup shirt front with no adjustments. I can see shortening it or adding back darts to change the look but this is an excellent pattern. It was a good, slow project. There are so many techniques that truly scared the heck out of me, like putting the collar together successfully and all the topstitching. But the directions and suggestions are so right on, it's like Liesl was right there with me saying, "You can do this, start this way..." I feel like I faced so many sewing fears on this, really improved my skills and am so happy with the result. Thank you Liesl! I will be back for more patterns fo sho!

This was my first go at a tailored shirt and I’m so glad I used this pattern. Clear and detailed instructions helped enormously as I did sleeve cuffs and a collar with a stand for the first time. Fit is great (note: I’m 5’9 and I appreciate shirts with a bit of length and the body and sleeve lengths on this were great). Most importantly, I love the final result and will make more. A stylish new basic in my wardrobe. Will definitely look at more Liesl and Co patterns.

      Nice pattern with great details

I have made three shirts so far with this pattern and have come to really enjoy it. I made the first one (100% cotton broadcloth) in a size 4 according to my measurements, but the shoulders ended up being a little too narrow and the sleeves were a bit too short. For the second one (also broadcloth), I modified the pattern to a size 8, graded down to a 4 in the torso, eliminated the dart, and lengthened the sleeves by about 3/4." Perfect! I also moved the back pleat to the center, and created the View A placket look without the extra bulk by folding the View B placket to the outside and topstitching. For my third shirt, I broke out the charcoal 100% linen, and I am really pleased with the result. Love the collar and sleeve placket instructions, which produced really professional-looking results. The only reason I gave this pattern 4 stars instead of 5 is because I prefer the burrito method of attaching the yoke, which I find creates a cleaner finish and is easier.

I first used this pattern last summer to make a classic white shirt and used a fine, crisp cotton. The pattern was very easy to understand and I really appreciate the multiple bust sizes. It is a very comfortable shirt. I’ve worn it to shreds and now use it for garden work. It’s that comfortable. Thank you for this great pattern. It’s a keeper.

As others have stated, the instructions are very clear, there are new techniques which enhance the quality of your construction, but my favorite feature is that the pattern prints with a 1-inch square grid background that makes it so easy to adjust the pattern as needed (I had to lower the bust darts). I've made this twice but it will be my go to for many years as I wear blouses all the time!

      Great first classic shirt project!
Reviewed by Mary von Tobel ( Verified Buyer) on 09/05/2021
Usually I just make simple things but in this case chose to do something more detailed. Yes, it took more time, but there was such a feeling of accomplishment at the end. Normally I wear a 6 or 8, but wanted a big, long shirt that could double as a swimsuit coverup, so I upsized to a 12, extended the length to mid-calf, and used cotton lawn in a solid color. The directions are detailed and clear. There were templates for the buttonholes though there was really no info on marking and making them. The additional info on faux flat felling was very useful. I liked that no serger was used…not all of us have or want one. The fit was not critical because I upsized and did not require a FBA to begin with. This project increased my skill and confidence and I love the end result, so much so that I now have the men’s version of this pattern and am making it in flannel for my spouse!

I made this shirt recently with liberty Tana lawn. It is gorgeous and fresh to wear. I’m delighted with it, the instructions were mostly clear (collar and button placket I struggled a bit- but that’s down to my inexperience). I didn’t rush it. I would have liked it just a little bit less baggy on the back, maybe a tiny bit more tapered but I’m not confident altering patterns. Will definitely make another classic shirt again maybe I will feel braver and add some darts. Overall I love it and I’m very happy with it.

      Great relaxed fit
Reviewed by Krista Ellingson on 04/14/2021
I made this shirt in a soft striped cotton with pearl snap closures and a few minor changes and I absolutely love it. My measurements are 37-29-38. I made a size 10C. I work outdoors in an agriculture setting with lots of hiking, horseback riding, etc. and wanted something loose-ish without being huge. I usually wear modified men's shirts, but I wanted to make something that would fit better in the shoulders and arms but still have room for my chest. The only modifications I made were to shorten the body by 3/4 of the inch, make the yoke deeper by 1 inch, and move the pleats to the centre back. I slightly changed the shape of the pockets. I would say I am an intermediate level sewist, and the instructions were easy to understand.

I looked for some time to find the perfect pattern for a timeless shirt. This pattern fits that bill. There are some tricky bits but the instructions together with the sew along on the blog made it very do-able. I did deviate from the instructions and used the burrito method for the yoke. Overall the fit is good but a little on the large size. I am short so did shorten both the body and sleeves by 2 inches. I did take in the side seams a little to give a bit more shaping. Will definitely use the pattern many times again. A very enjoyable sew

I had been looking for and trying out patterns to recreate the fit and look of a favorite ready-to-wear. None of them did it for me until Liesl came through. I needed to do some length adjustment, being quite petite, but that was it. I sewed the first shirt in a brightly flowered quilting cotton, the next in a hefty flannel, cut out another in white pinwale corduroy, another in a silky tencel chambray and plans for at least four more in time. My only complaints are the lack of a center front marking and the utterly ridiculous ½ inch seam allowance, both of which are easy to remedy. It's an easy pattern to modify as well. I like it so well I purchased both a digital and paper copy.

Reviewed by Julie Stilwell ( Verified Buyer) on 09/26/2020
I purchased the Classic Shirt pattern after reading many of the reviews. I hoped that I would be able to get a good fit without too much pattern alteration and was very happy that my wearable muslin is actually quite a good fit. I used the largest size (20) and the B cup. The directions were excellent and brought back memories of when I used to sew more for myself and use tailoring techniques. After making my muslin version, I did decide to raise the sleeve seam to be closer to my shoulder and I did have to make an adjustment to the bicep fit by increasing it about an inch for comfort. I did not add the pocket to my version. I felt on a patterned fabric it gets lost and I didn't want to make it out of the contrast fabric I used. The sleeve length was perfect (which as I have long arms is a surprise). I love the fact that I can vary the look by using contrast fabrics. I have plans to make this shirt many times. I have received many compliments on my final version!

I really enjoyed making this shirt. Instructions were well written. Fit was perfect with the cup sizes. One suggestion to include an option with instructions to do felled seams. I like the look of felled seams and did them on this shirt. I doing so so, I hit a snag and had to improvise when it came to sewing the area where the side seams and the hem meet. This was my fault for deviating from the pattern instructions. I also would not follow the instructions which state to cut the shirt sleeve placket. I would do it in one piece, which I think is easier. I love the shirt and have received many compliments when wearing it!!! I will definitely be making more.

I'm returning to sewing after taking a break for many years and I decided to try this basic shirt pattern because nice shirts are so hard to find. The fabric is a cotton/linen blend. I used the classic shirt blog as well as the written instructions. The instructions were very clear, and the shirt turned out beautifully. The collar is perfect, and the fit is great after shortening the body and sleeves a bit. I used the digital pattern and was impressed that I could choose only the size I needed. I will be using this pattern many times. P.S. I believe there is a mistake in the instructions on the blog. In #1, it says to trim 1 1/4" from the front edge of the right front, following the line on the pattern. That line is actually only 1" from the edge. It is correct on the written instructions.
Thanks for pointing out the typo in the sew along on the blog! We have fixed that now.

I bought the classic shirt pattern and absolutely love it! I had never made a long sleeve with a fitted cuff beforehand and managed it perfectly with a little help from Liesl’s sew along. I made a cotton muslin to test the fit and aside from shortening the body and sleeves (a normal adjustment for me) it was perfect. I now have a stunning custom made shirt for my wardrobe. I am so pleased with this pattern. I am returning to sewing and wanted to make some basics. I made the Everyday Skirt and had good success with that so I decided to up the ante with a collared shirt. I was a bit fearful as I tried to make some shirts about 30 years ago and did not have good success. But I really liked the fact that there was a sew-along on the blog to refer to. Also, I could see that people had made the shirt and it looked good on almost everyone. I am amazed at how well the collar turned out since this was always a problem for me before. Also, having the C-cup pattern pieces is a big plus. The instructions are really well written and clear. I'm now making another classic shirt and the only change I am making to the pattern is to lower the bust darts a bit. I'm approaching 60 and apparently gravity is having its way with me!

      Love this pattern

Very happy with this pattern and also the Recital Shirt pattern. Your size 2 is almost spot on with my measurements so no need to alter although I think I might add just 1/2” to the sleeve length next time. Instructions very clear and precise. I particularly like the fit of the sleeve cap, not too much ease, I find the ‘big four’ pattern companies overdo the ease so you end up with a puffed sleeve look, not so here. I am thinking I will use this pattern to help me adapt other patterns in this area.

      Classic shirt pattern

I liked the instructions. They reminded me of instructions from David Coffing's book which I refer to often. I made this shirt for my daughter who does not live close enough for fittings. She is a D cup. The dart was too high. It looked high even before I cut it out but I thought I'd give the pattern a try before messing with it. I made a second shirt using a French dart that worked well. I find that a French dart is more flattering and fits better with for afull bust.

      Wonderful pattern
Reviewed by Diane doherty ( Verified Buyer) on 11/20/2017
I’ve spent the last 9 yrs studying fit from independent designers. I found Liesl % Co, and I am impressed. The drafting and fit are wonderful. I am. D-cup, so I am always greatful when I don’t have to take the time to adjust. The only adjustments I made were for sloping shoulders and sway back (I automatically do this on every pattern). I was pleased with the fit, and will make this again. I learned shirt making details on Craftsy, and Liesl’s info was similar. I also love the packaging, the paper tissue seems to be of a better quality, and best of all, Liesl sends out regular emails of which I love to read. A high class company indeed.

      What a Classic!

I have just finished sewing this shirt for the first time and the fit is fabulous. I loved the instructions that were clear and concise and particularly liked the way the collar was put together. I also followed a couple of the tutorials and found these most helpful. I will certainly be making this pattern again. Thank you for sharing your talents.

      Classic Shirt: Wonderful Pattern
Reviewed by Lisa Hawkes ( Verified Buyer) on 06/16/2017
This pattern, its instructions and the corresponding tutorial are wonderful. I made a size 4, B cup based on the pattern sizing directions and the fit is perfect. I found the method for attaching the collar into the collar band especially helpful and was able to achieve a professional finish - something I hadn't achieved with other shirt patterns. As other reviewers have mentioned, the different cup sizes make such a difference. I have a second one planned and have purchased additional Liesl and Co. patterns because of how well this went!

As a long time sewer(hate hat word) I have sewn many shirts, but this pattern and the tutorial that goes with it is the best. I am now on my third version of this. That fact that it has the full angle of bust sizing(a cup to d cup) is the thing that puts it above others . Well done Liesl!!

      Classic Shirt

This is an well drafted pattern which sews up beautifully. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. I also consulted the sew along when I was unsure of any of the instructions and found this an excellent accompaniment to the pattern. I used the finished garment measurements to decide on my size instead of my actual measurements as there was quite a bit of ease in the pattern. I used the A cup front piece even though I usually do a full bust adjustment in other patterns. This shirt pattern will become my go-to and I will certainly make it in many different colours and fabrics.

      Excellent Pattern
Reviewed by Morko ( Verified Buyer) on 05/10/2017
This turned out very well and I was pleased with the fit. I made view A in size 4 bust size C without the pockets. I measure 34 1/2inches in the upper bust. This was the right size. I lowered the bust dart, shortened the length at the waist and did a smallish forward shoulder adjustment . Used an inexpensive cotton shirting material that I had bought on sale last year. I found the instructions detailed and good. It is helpful to read them in advance as there are a few times I found an instruction made more sense if you read through the entire section first. It is also important to be very careful in all the top stitching to get a professional look. Having the front pattern in different cup sizes saves a lot of time on not having to do a FBA. My only criticism is that I would really like to have the centre front line marked on the plackets for the front.
