What a great topic, thank you @emilyg
This is near to my heart as it is my 7 year olds sewing turn next.
Tildy has her own Pinterest board https://www.pinterest.com/fiveandcounting/sewing-for-tildy/ and we regularly go through it together and discuss what she likes. What surprised me is how sophisticated her taste is. Tildy is also incredible…[Read more]

I agree with the above, I was making what I liked for my oldest, then getting annoyed when she would only wear it once it twice. I finally figured out that I needed to ask her opinion on basically everything.
Her current favorites are the school bus tee, field trip Raglan and the swingset skirt. She has more of a casual style, so I always try…[Read more]

I was going to suggest the hopscotch. You can make a shirt or dress. You can color block. My almost 6 year old loves the two I just made. She wants them as nightgowns so comfy.
But yes input it key. It is their ownership of the garment. But I limit choices. I present an either or Or best of 3.

I agree with Tamara and Jill that getting her input is the key to success. This is a difficult time for me in sewing for my 7 because she is very specific in what she wants, and she isn’t interested in anything she considers even remotely stuffy or formal. That translates mostly as no woven fabrics; almost everything in her closet is knit…[Read more]

What a stunning color of a muslin. I want a dress in that color. And the back was a lovely fit. I can’t wait to see the dress!
Yes, I need the book!
I just finished a hopscotch. One was done except hems. I think I will probably never hem a knit again and will always lettuce them. So easy. I do it a touch differently than the tutorial.…[Read more]

I’ll second that, the book has so many great patterns in it. I just made 5 of the bear carriers for a birthday party and they were a huge hit. I’m afraid I have two UFO messenger bags lurking somewhere — must get to finishing those!

Wow. Everyone sounds super busy. I wish I had the time to see more. I have 3 hopscotch dresses in various states. And a bunch of in a clutch too. I really need to get the book for the messenger bag.
Today I am home with the sick- not really sick daughter. She broke out in a rash last night. Since so many childhood diseases start this way,…[Read more]

Oh, a big yes to doll clothes! My daughter hasn’t been hugely interested in her doll, but her grandma is taking her out for the full American Girl experience so she’s getting more excited. I’ve been saving the larger scraps from her clothes so I can make coordinating ones for her doll. Might be a good way to extend my shelf life as the in house seamstress?

Sew Alongs 10 years agoWould a wool jersey work? Or something like this:

I have a sweater of similar cut as this coat that my mother covets. I’d love to make it in a sweater or lighter jersey so it can be worn indoors during the winter. It gets cold here in the Northeastern US.

Thanks @motherof5 and @cybele727 for taking the time to respond!! We will be sewing a size 4T, with added length to the hem, so maybe we’ll be okay :).

I found it plenty for the size 5 and 6. My girl has a decent sized noggin and she’s no fan of the tight neck hole.
