I see that too, but if I go to one of the subfora, I get the compose window there. Possibly it’s just set up to prevent you from accidentally creating a new topic in the wrong place?

Great thoughts, ladies. You make some really important points — it will not necessarily always be the case that she wants to wear what I make. Now will I be able to sew from such small quantities of fabric for that much longer, for that matter. Maybe it’s best to just enjoy it while we’re both happy with it.
There’s also the good point about…[Read more]

I was thinking about this while looking over the holiday sewing thread. My kid’s closet is bursting with party dresses. I feel semi-guilty about the size of my stash, so I have been trying to make some inroads, and since I buy small cuts, it limits what I can sew.
As a result, she has had a new dress for: Easter, Valentine’s, the school’s…[Read more]

@mommy2maria Jess I’m so sorry! I wish that particular bad fairy would go on vacation.
Cheers, @motherof5 Nicole, and yes, not near my laptop! (Ok, truthfully, it’s always near my laptop)

I have sewn almost every piece of this dress incorrectly — to the wrong other piece, backwards, inside out …

I’m at the part where I need to decide whether to add the sash to the Fairy Tale dress. Wish I could teleport you gals here to give me your opinions!

@cybele I hope that grieving so close to this holiday will be somehow spiritually reviving and comforting. My daughter’s first birthday was the day after my grandfather’s funeral. It was enormously helpful to connect death with new life in that way.
@Todd that’s a wonderful poem! He’s got it right.
My MIL took my kid out for an Easter egg hunt…[Read more]

Armenians and Iranians are very very similar! I am quite sure I’ve seen some of those picnics 🙂

Oh, everyone’s plans sound so nice! Don’t worry about the rain, I’m sure the bubbly will be it’s own kind of sunshine 🙂
Thanks for the idea about including some swim gear, that’ll work great for us!

What’s everyone doing for the holidays? Spring break is here or nearly here, Easter and Passover (I think? I’m an atheist so I apologize if I’ve got it wrong) are on their way, and Persian New Year just passed.
We went out for the traditional Persian ‘outdoor thirteen’ picnic, two weeks after the Spring equinox, albeit by accident. My birthday…[Read more]

Wishing you peace in your heart, Jay. Loss of a peer is so difficult in its own way, and to lose a beloved friend is even harder.

Actually I can show you all four of those elements in EZ’s work — but as I noted, she can be a bit of an acquired taste, and really, there’s no need to push her onto anybody who’s said they’re not interested. Her legacy’s rock solid and not going anywhere.
But! It sounds like you have a good sense of what you want and perhaps just needed a bit…[Read more]

I feel like I’m running an ad agency for Brooklyn Tweed at this point, but it’s just something I know well and can use for a further example; I’m sure many other designers have a lot of these fantastic features.
When looking at a knitting pattern, you might be happier if:
1. It has a lot of makes on Ravelry. You can look at modeled photos of…[Read more]

I was thinking about this thread this morning while I was blocking something. It’s this pattern: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/arlo
and it asks you to block to a schematic. I was thinking that there are only a few ways for a garment to not fit. One, it’s poorly designed. Same as with sewing patterns — it asks for too few inches for a…[Read more]
