Hello! I’ve recently acquired some beautiful merino suiting and would like to make a light coat. The cut of the Lisette Butterick pattern is exactly what I’m looking for but, as I understand, it’s intended for heavier fabrics. Could I get away with sewing it in the suiting or would I be better off finding a different pattern? I really like Liesls…[Read more]

Hi Deanna
There are some really great classes on Craftsy involving fitting. I have particularly found the classes by Joi Mahon helpful. The reason for this is that even though I have a dressmaker’s dummy to pin my Muslims onto, it doesn’t look like me and of course because of this it turns out totally wrong and fits the dummy not myself.
Joi…[Read more]

So, I am such a novice when it comes to fitting myself. I find myself getting so overwhelmed when I make a muslin that I end up chucking it for a while and making something for the kids instead. I have a couple of fitting books, but where is the best place to post pictures and get input from other sewers? Are there really helpful crafty classes…[Read more]

Yeah, I kind of realized it was a huge question. However, thanks for pointing me to some good resources. I will just have to keep a running list of types as I peruse blog posts, pictures, etc. I wish one could find more stores that sold apparel fabrics (and decent ones).

This is a pretty big topic and more than I can address in a quick reply. However, I did do an introduction to some basic garment fabrics in a CreativeBug class if you’re interested: https://www.creativebug.com/classseries/single/fabrics-101
I think if you look back at previous blog posts you’ll be able to gather a lot of information as well. Try…[Read more]

I am looking at sewing some shirts/blouses for myself. I would like to sew in fabrics that have a nice drape. 1) What are these fabrics? 2) What are the nicer fabrics to work with? 3) Are there any tips (previous posts?) for working with slippery fabric?
Also, I buy my fabric exclusively online since I am not happy with the quality at the…[Read more]

help, help!! i am making the sailboat pants in age 4 and i am having big leg problems! the front of the pants are much narrower than the back, it’s almost like they are a totally different size. I bought the pattern online and printed it off very carefully, I have triple checked and I cut out exactly where the age 4 size was marked for the front…[Read more]

Hi B.T.,
Did you get an answer to the difference in leg widths? I haven’t bought a pattern yet but was encouraged by a friend to buy the
(first) book.

I’m cautious about bra straps at work, but not at home. Spaghetti straps and racer backs are both pretty casual for me.

Oh my I was thrilled to see your sew a long! I haven’t made a swimsuit before and picked up a pattern for the two piece for my daughter – I have the bottoms all most finished! Super helpful visuals and process. Thanks! After I finish this one, I’ll try my hand at making a the one piece for myself (gulp)!

Hi @Liesl
Just a comment to add to the others here re: the usefulness of the sewalong. I knew I wouldn’t be making the swimsuit until around now for my summer vacation, but I already liked your patterns when they first went on sale, and, honestly, the fact I knew there was a sewalong was a major factor in going ahead and taking the plunge into…[Read more]
