@KAREN thankyou. His insurance is covering it and apparently he gets to go shopping in Paris! Thank goodness for insurance!

So my nephew has started his overseas trip which will ultimately turn into a semester of University studies in Canada. He arrived in Paris yesterday I think but unfortunately, he lost his luggage at the airport AND his phone was stolen! Not a good start I think! We are just hoping he was wise and didn’t leave anything on the phone that would cost…[Read more]

I hope that zip behaved and came together sufficiently for you Sarvi!

Sounds like some lovely sister sewing going on. My own sister sews too and we have done this in the past but she lives five hours away from me now so we don’t get to do it anymore.

I’ve been all inspired to get the pleater out because I hopped onto the Frances suzanne blog!…[Read more]

Try it Kim. Just baste it so it’s easy to rip out.

Oh, forgot to mention that yes, I did consider having the button closure instead, and in fact our very own Lotta has a tutorial for it, but unfortunately this occurred to me after I’d already cut my fabric, and I didn’t have enough to cut another back bodice. I even thought about Frankensteining an extra button panel or something on there but…[Read more]

I made and finished the size 4 bubble, adding length (about an inch each) to both the bodice and skirt, plus extra width to the skirt for extra pouf. I didn’t realize how much shorter a bubbly bubble is than a deflated one (without elastic) which is the way I usually make them. I don’t know if it’s just that I’m used to longer dresses on her or…[Read more]

  • Ditto the above — unless a particular needle is giving me problems like the popping/grinding you mentioned, I just use universal needles for everything, including knits.

Sarvi how did you go? Did you get the two made in one day?

@KAREN some of us are known to attempt some crazy things with our sewing, but never in my time on this forum can I remember Sarvi doing anything of the sort!

Wouldn’t it be great if we could just slip our sewing into some portal to get it to the destination quicker, then Sarvi wouldn’t…[Read more]

  • Sorry I can’t be of help, my machine hates ball point or stretch needles so I sew everything with universals. And get great results.
    Maybe try a universal needle?

  • I think my lining layer is more opaque, but the top layer is sheer enough that you could see this rectangle beneath it, but using fusible web and a scrap of thin fabric worked really well. I added a scrap to the bottom of the (white) zipper as well. It’s not perfect — is 1am sewing ever — but nobody’ll notice from the cheap seats 🙂

    Thanks, Heidi!

  • That makes more sense 🙂
You won’t see the white interfacing through black fabric, normally. I have used double sides fusible and thin fabric to make my own interfacing.

  • D’oh! Good catch, Heidi! I only have *white* interfacing, not black. Oh brother, that was a very confusing question, wasn’t it. THanks so much, I’ll go check out that link!

  • I’m a little confused on the colour of interfacing you’re missing 🙂
I can’t see why the pleat wouldn’t work. I would also check to see how much length she needs to get in and out of the dress. you may be able to only add the zipper to the bodice.
Also you might want to check this out for ideas for the zip, http://www.ikatbag.com/2014/11/elsa.html

  • Hi folks, any suggestions for me? I’m installing a zip in a (fairy tale) dress with a white bodice and black skirt. The skirt and skirt lining are both very delicate, sheer silk fabrics. I only have black fusible interfacing. I’m wondering whether I could use wonder tape/fusible web and bit of lightweight black cotton to improvise the interfacing…[Read more]
