Oliver + S

  • Patterns for blokes would be wonderful from the O + S team. Short/long sleeve shirt; smart shorts (second the idea of flat front waistband with elastic back, pj bottoms, shaving jacket/dressing gown. I not interested in items requiring knits but I’m sure many women will be. PS. a pattern for making a tie would be great, too.

  • I am almost done a ‘Goldstream Peacoat’ for my mister. It is gorgeous (thanks to the help of my excellent sewing teacher). Next on my list is the ‘Newcastle Cardigan’. I have tried a men’s shirt, first I made the O+S Sketchbook shirt for my daughter to practice, all went well, then tried to make a matching shirt for Dad for Father’s Day last year.…[Read more]

  • 😅 if ever there’s a six year old who could “lounge” it’s yours Sarvi!

I think this dress would be lovely in wool, but bear in mind that it is unlined, for one, and a long full dress, too. You’d want to select your wool carefully to be sure it felt nice against your skin, and the dress didn’t feel too heavy or stiff.

Hi, when I shortened the yoke on mine, I removed one inch from the bottom edge of the yoke, and raised the center skirt by a corresponding one inch. To remove fullness I would narrow the center skirt by moving the pattern piece past the fold, so the left and right edges were the same, but there was less width. I’m not sure if that’s the kind of…[Read more]

What is a ‘lounge set’ for children? I am supposed to make one by Friday, but not sure I have ever seen a 6 year old lounge.

  • @todd if sewing for you means I “have to” take a trip to Spain for fittings then yes, I will volunteer. Can’t make any promises about the quality of my work, post-sangria. Might find my husband and daughter suddenly making themselves invaluable as tracers of patterns and stitchers of buttons.

I’m another no-intentional-bra-strapper, and while I keep meaning to buy a different style of bra that will allow me to wear a racerback style (which I actually find very comfortable as well as liking how it looks) I somehow have never gotten around to it, which probably reveals something.

  • Way to go @harmony it’s a nice feeling, knowing you’re learning and improving with every garment.
I just cut the welts open on the jacket I’m making. Doesn’t matter how many times I sew a welt, the moment when you slash them open is nerve wracking.
Add in that this is the most expensive fabric I’ve ever bought and it’s taken a week to get the…[Read more]

I love racer backs, all my favorite tops and dresses have them. I find that if I situate my straps appropriately they barely show, but I wouldn’t care if they did. I do have a little clip thingy that hooks on the straps between the shoulder blades for fancier affairs at which visible straps might be a faux pas.

Not for me I’m afraid. I really haven’t (deliberately) shown my bra straps since my early 20s, and I don’t intend to! Yes for evening and sports wear but I have no need for evening wear.

  • I second the cargo shorts and button front shirt.

To add, I fell in love with Oliver +s because of the hint of retro styling to the designs, because the styles are timeless and classic. If you do produce a men’s button-down shirt, one that is less “modern” styled and more traditional in design would be wonderful. Especially if it has a great…[Read more]

Once I get the fountain repainted and assembled today, I’m hoping to head upstairs to the studio and work on a pair of white cigarette pants (for me), a white pair of highwaisted shorts (for me), and if I finish both of those items up, I plan to start tracing a pair of 1950’s patterns that are mother-daughter in design. The fair is a 2 weeks away,…[Read more]

@justsewit, how frightening! And probably a little frustrating. I’m quite certain that the repair shop locked the lug nuts on very tightly for you, considering. It’s so frustrating to have car troubles when traveling by yourself with small children. Not to mention having to pay for vehicle work to be done. So glad you were able to repair the issue…[Read more]

My husband returned to work yesterday following vacation time off, with a freshly altered and repaired uniform shirt.

We had plans of a small trip during his time off, but 2 days before his vacation started, he was attacked by a pitbull while checking on a report of a domestic assault. He’s going to sport a lovely scar on his upper left arm, but…[Read more]

  • I love when women wear spaghetti straps! If anyone is concerned with visible bra straps for us less perky creatures, I’m a great fan of the clear bra strap. As for racer back tops, I personally can’t stand them. I feel like they belong with active wear and in a workout setting alone. That said, I don’t like the fit of racerback anything on myself,…[Read more]

  • Back when I was younger/perter/leaner I would have foregone the underwear and worn these styles. Nowadays I’d limit it to gym wear or swimmers (racer back) or lingerie or black tie (spaghetti straps). I can’t deal with visible bra straps, and can’t be bothered with strapless bras for everyday wear 😣
