I always cast on 50 stitches and do 5 garter stitches on each end, and a few garter rows to begin with. When I cast off, it keeps my swatch from curling. Especially in Stockinette. I recently learned the value in swatching…usually I don’t mind, as I knit stuff for DD so if it’s bigger, well she can wear it longer or next season. But this…[Read more]

  • My problem with carbon and tracing is that sometimes the marks need to be on the right side, and that stuff doesn’t wash off!

I am learning to love tailor tacks.

Linda is spot on. The only thing I would add is that some yarns are inherently very firm and some grow/bloom in counterintuitive way so also block your swatch. Even a half or a third of a stitch off (in width — row gauge is better handled in inches, I think) can add up so much more quickly than it seems it should.

I dreamt about the new O+S patterns last night. In my dream there were two of them and I was very excited but I cannot for the life of me remember what I dreamt they were … clearly sewing has been at the forefront of my thinking lately!

I’ve been looking for notchers like that but have had trouble finding any in my part of the world. Maybe it’s an issue of translation – I have no idea what they would be called in Swedish.

If O+S were to carry them I would pick up a pair in no time!

  • Bees at a spelling bee sounds so cute!
I’ve traced off Jalie 3244, footie pj’s, and a hood from Ottobre. I’m making it in red and black coral fleece, super cozy 🙂

For best results, make your swatch about 6″ square. This allows you to measure out a 4″ square to count your rows and stitches more effectively. The reason for not just making a 4″ square swatch is that the edges will be uneven, making it difficult to count precisely. Even being a few stitches out can affect the finished size of your garment. For…[Read more]

  • The two pieces of interfacing are for the crotch snap placket on the bodysuit only, not for the neck placket. I haven’t looked at the errata to see if/how the directions were edited to fix the confusion, but that’s what it’s intended for – those snaps see a lot more wear & tear due to diaper changes, crawling, etc and need to be reinforced.

    Hope…[Read more]

How does that notcher work, I wonder. But I’d use it. I hate notch cutting.

Nice glass head pins. If you’ve ever melted the plastic heads on your fabric when ironing, you quickly learn the value of glass head.

I once bought Dritz glass head pins with white heads. I was using them in a class and was told never to buy them because they were…[Read more]

I did not know such a thing existed … and I now desperately want one!

  • Does anyone else have the Village Frock pattern they would be willing to sell? Thanks,Linda

Really nice shears, needles, and pins, maybe a really nice thread for hand sewing delicate items? I’d be interested in something nice that I can’t get at JoAnn — not a consumable staple but something upgraded.

And completely frivoulous, but I really want a buttonhole chisel! LOL

  • I’m having this issue right now! I usually scale up. Only because I know we will wear it eventually! This said, I haven’t made many of the pants yet! Only shorts!

I have the feeling Maria is teeny like Tildy! I think the ones I know are a tight fit over the head, I’m sizing up to 5’s. I’m still debating on the Family Reunion–4 or 5 LOL.…[Read more]
