The book mentions that the seam allowances are included, I believe. I don’t know whether the free pattern states that they are included, but it tells you what seam allowance to use, and presumably doesn’t tell you to add seam allowances? Sorry, I have made mine from the book rather than the freebie so I’m not closely familiar with it. Feel free to…[Read more]

That sounds like a perfect way to do a blind hem!

I have two fairy tales, two bubbles, and a Scirocco (Figgy’s) done as recital dresses with white bodices and black skirts. Two are in cotton, two in silk, the Scirocco in linen. Silk looks fantastic, cotton is easiest to wear, linen wrinkles like crazy (obviously, right? it was for a very hot day and I thought she’d be cooler and more comfortable)…[Read more]

All Oliver and S patterns, unless designed for knits, have a 1/2 ” seam allowance.
Knit patterns have 1/4″ seam allowances. -

Still working on the Arielle. I am really enjoying taking my time and producing a beautiful garment. It is a simple pattern with some opportunities for nice touches like a bias-bound facing and hand-blind-stitched hem (did that last night in front of the TV). Tonight I’ll make buttonholes and sew on buttons and then it will be ready to present…[Read more]

juliamom2009 replied to the topic Uniform Fabric Sourcing in the forum off topic 11 years ago
I’m really lucky that I have a great brick and mortar store near me – I went shopping for school uniform fabric there. I bought about 5 different substrates – all manufactured by Robert Kaufman. I have pre-washed all, and they washed up great. One was a twill, one corduroy, one that feels almost like a heavier weight stable knit (suitable for a…[Read more]

Once you make up your mind to do the extra work, nz; I’m sure you’ll feel pleased that you did – especially as you say that the fabric will ‘appreciate’ it. Sit down with a cuppa, and something relaxing on the radio, and hem away quietly.

T, and Heidi, your denim projects sound very interesting – looking forward to seeing the results. I’m more than half way thru my first Carousel dress, although, I have cut out another. The WIP is size 5 in raspberry wide wale corduroy with a striped cotton for the pockets, cuffs, and for the binding. I’ve just finished binding the hem which always…[Read more]

Thank you for your help I did what you suggested and went with the chest measurement. I cut a 12/14 bodice out and put a pin at the intersection of the underarm and side seam allowance and pivoted it out to a 1X. Then cut the waistband out for a 1X. It seemed to work, I’m waiting to hear if it fits. Fingers crossed.

Someone may have already suggested this but I would love a Moto type jacket for girls that might also work for boys.

After carefully drawing diagrams to make sure I had orentation correct for the appliquΓ© of my friends constom made caravan I’m including in the denim quilt, I forgot I needed to flip it over so when I ironed the fusible interfacing to the back it would be around the right way! Oh well, I’m off to have another go, this time I’ll add their car too.

Supposedly only happens once every 10 years. The last one was 2004. This is also the first time in 29 years that it snowed to sea level, snow on the beach! π

I would really like a long sleeved dress that doesn’t feel too practical! I know there are several three quarter length sleeve dress patterns, and I could lengthen them, but I would really enjoy another long sleeved dress. Ideally something more ‘party-like’, like the garden party or fairy tale. I guess i’m thinking that sleeves will be the order…[Read more]
