I’m not an expert in sergers by any means, but I have the SINGER 14CG754, and I really like it. It seems to be roughly equivalent in price and function to the Brother (? maybe? Like I said, not an expert!). For actual garment construction, I’ve only used the four-thread stitch, but I played around with 2 and 3 thread stitches when I was first…[Read more]

I just sewed this recently, and trimmed only from the bottom hem.It worked perfectly.

Trying this again – still not a great photo, but my model is less than cooperative.

BAAAAH! I’ll try again on the photo this evening.
Incidentally, the hood is just fine on his big head.

This is a truly terrible photo, but I wanted to post anyway: I love this jacket! I cannot believe *I* made it! This pattern is awesome.
I made the 18-24 month size, and I think that was the right choice. It’s a little big, but not ridiculous, so good for this year and I think next year, too.
My only difficulty in construction came from trying to…[Read more]

All right – I’ve started. I finished the hood last night, and I already love the way it looks.
I’m using magnetic snaps, but I have a question I’m hoping someone can answer – when do I apply them? They’re the type with two prongs that get inserted through the fabric, rather than the sew-on variety. That being the case, I should apply them to the…[Read more]

Thanks for the replies, everyone! Nicole and Juliamom, I most definitely looked at both of your jackets in the Flickr pool – lovely!
I realized I never mentioned my son’s current age – he’s 15 months. Sounds like the 18-24 month size might be a better fit for him – I don’t need to worry about layering over bulky sweaters, so if it’s…[Read more]

Enbee replied to the topic 'Big' Cake Recipes in the forum
Cooking and Baking 10 years agoI’ve made the chocolate cake recipe (although not in this size – scaled down significantly, different frosting and filling) on this post from Deb at Smitten Kitchen, and I loved it. She mentions in another post that she used this for the 12-inch layer in a wedding cake, and that she baked and froze each layer.…[Read more]

My little guy doesn’t currently have a winter coat, and I’ve been admiring this one since my first visits to O&S. So I’m doing it! Just bought the pattern. This will be my first proper coat (I made the Secret Agent trench coat last year, but it’s not lined, and it was for a costume, so I didn’t finish seams nicely or unpick a few puckers on the…[Read more]

Cooking and Baking 10 years agoI know this is going to sound ridiculous (I mean, it’s toddlers), but google ‘broccoli tots.’ Never mind that my 14-month-old likes them (which he does, to the point of ignoring anything else on his plate), but *I* like them. Which, if you knew me, is truly miraculous. They are the only form in which I will eat broccoli, and I’ve tried ’em all.…[Read more]

Double beh – I’ve gotten some advice on this thread already about reducing the stretching! Will try the interfacing on the sleeve hems. Thanks!

Enbee replied to the topic Mix interlock with jersey? in the forum oliver + s: field trip 10 years ago
Beh. Stretchy interlock is the worst. The sleeves attached to the body just fine, but trying to hem them with a double needle is not working out. The outer (relative to the sewing machine) needle keeps dropping stitches, and I can’t seem to keep the fabric from stretching as I sew directly perpendicular to the grain (and I’m using a walking foot).…[Read more]

Enbee replied to the topic Fabric choices in the forum oliver + s: lullaby 10 years ago
My little guy was born last summer, so I might feel differently about it if I’d had a winter baby (heck, my guy barely wore clothes at all for his first month!). But I think corduroy might be better for the jacket, with something less bulky to cover those bunchy little newborn legs.
Congratulations to you and to the new parents!

Great, thanks!
I’m a raw beginner with my serger (although I CAN successfully thread it now – woohoo!). I was going to make this particular FT shirt as my first non-washcloth serger project. Think that’s a bad idea, given the mix of fabrics?
