I have just done the buttonholes on the “spelling bee” bubble and will sit down to sew the buttons on. I am currently wrestling with a stubbon self covered button and have to construct its partner. This will go on a denim teaparty dress I made yesterday and finished this morning – the thing is so stiff it stands up by itself! I have already made…[Read more]

Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Best O +S pattern to use to make jeans? in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 10 years ago
@sayiamyou I LOVED those red skinny Sketchbook jeans of Nicole’s. They’re soooooo good.
I think almost any pattern can look jeans-ish if you use denim, an appropriate topstitching colour and do something jeans-esque to the back pocket. At least that’s my theory.
I was thinking maybe back pocket decoration might be a good idea for an Oliver + S…[Read more] -

I recently used the Sketchbook for jeans for my daughter: https://www.flickr.com/photos/79480359@N03/14699004800/
And After School for my son:https://www.flickr.com/photos/79480359@N03/8668350104/
But my all time favourites were made by mixing the After School back with a modified Field Trip front:…[Read more] -

I think Badminton would make a fantastic nightgown. Though I also have a Kwik Sew pattern that I love for nighties.

@sahmcolorado I think I will be doing this for my oldest girl too! She still takes a 2 or 3 width in the dress patterns but she needs 6 for length.
lol @Jess M. that is quite an impressive stack you have going!

Are you noting down all your interesting pregnancy dreams Masha? I didn’t, but then I didn’t have them.
Just got a message that friends of ours have had baby number three last week and we missed the whole thing – was planning a hosptial visit but they apparently are now at home. Number three is a baby girl which is thrilling enough in itself. I…[Read more]

Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Marking the markings–argh!! in the forum off topic 10 years ago
I’ve gone right off cutting notches as sometimes the seam allowance is small and a vigorous notch could land me in trouble!
I make all markings with ceramic pencil (cloverline) about the only fabric it struggles with is fluffy wool or fleece.
To mark dots within the pattern I stick a pin through all layers, pattern tracing and fabrics and then…[Read more] -
Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Lining? in the forum oliver + s: family reunion 10 years ago
I may be lacking imagination (it’s early morning here) but my thoughts re the placket is that you can’t.
If you want the lining attached attached at the top but free at the bottom you’d need to make the placket only half length or have an almost separate under dress with it’s own placket. Both would be icky solutions I think.
How about underling…[Read more] -

Fiber Club! 10 years agoWell I started the pattern part of the dress yesterday and after two rows have already stuffed it up. I “yarn forward” ed the wrong way! So I will start again I guess. For some reason I ended up with five stitches at the end instead of three so I will use something as counters when I cast on to make sure the number of stitches is correct. Then it…[Read more]

Fiber Club! 10 years agoTamara, that is exciting – and the answer of course is, “it depends.” In my most prolific (pre-kids) knitting days I could finish a hat in two days, and an adult sweater in two weeks. But I spent hours per day doing it. Now it takes me forever to finish anything – I may knit up to an hour a day when I am very smitten with a project (but I’ve…[Read more]

Fiber Club! 10 years agoFor someone who doesn’t usually knit and doesn’t consider herself a knitter, I have embarked on a project I hope to finish rather fast. Time will tell. But I have always wanted to have a knitted baby dress so I am making one for Chloe. I actually signed up to ravelry and that has inspired me to knit also. There is this beautiful dress I’d love to…[Read more]

Fiber Club! 10 years agoLinda is spot on. The only thing I would add is that some yarns are inherently very firm and some grow/bloom in counterintuitive way so also block your swatch. Even a half or a third of a stitch off (in width — row gauge is better handled in inches, I think) can add up so much more quickly than it seems it should.
