Up here, foothills of teh Adirondacks, we avoided teh snow when a cold dry arctic blast came through and moved teh snow 75 miles east. No sweing though. We have a small farm so storm preps means hauling hay to areas easily accessible, blanketing any animals that can wear blankets and hauling hot water to teh water buckets many many times. When…[Read more]

  • and here it is! When singing, make hands into a mittens shape, wiggle thumbs when “The Thumb Place” is sung, then just move hands back and forth (or whatever) as you sing, so long as they stay in “mitten formation” ! As usual, when attempting to teach this skill to toddlers, just start singing the song and doing the hand movements yourself at any…[Read more]

  • this is an old timey thing I did when my kids were little, no sewing involved. They learned The Mitten Song…”thumb in the thumb’s place, fingers all together…..” and so on. I also taught this song to the 2 yr old nursery school group waay back. They loved it, caught on quickly and took pride on locating that thumb into the Thumb’s Place.…[Read more]

  • meleliza we lived outside Philly for a year and the biggest surprise was The Mummers Parade for New Years. We all know of The Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, watched on TV if not in person, but the only time I had seen Mummers in the past was when smaller traveling groups came to local parades. I had no idea the extent of the Mummers, an all day…[Read more]

  • A boat parade sounds awesome! and the down side of parades up here: keeping little ones warm. One year my then 6 yr old daughter was marching (twirling, beginner baton actually, so cute) marched out of her boot and kept on marching, obeying the rule not to stop. I had to grab her out of the parade and reunite her with her marching boot, she was…[Read more]

  • we will only get some, but the northwestern part of the state (near PA and The Great Lakes, will get the 3 ft, lake effect snows. They’re used to that and they can keep it out there (hopefully, sometimes it drifts, or slams, in). We are a large state, the coast has weather similar to what you had in VA but a bit colder, then upstate (Adirondack…[Read more]

  • I enjoy reading (and seeing pics) of holiday celebrations from all over. This Thursday the town next to ours will start off the holiday season with the Second Annual Lighted Tractor Parade. Guess it goes without saying we are a proud farming county here in upstate NY! Last year they had 49 entries (all sizes and ages of tractors , all decorated…[Read more]

  • we call those outside toilets outhouses, still in use at some camps as well in places off the grid (no electric access, not uncommon around the hills and mountains). My husband grew up using outhouses in North Carolina, no indoor plumbing until about 40 yrs ago for his family. We call indoor flush things toilets, he refers to them as commodes…[Read more]

  • how many of us Yanks grew up “using the john” when we had to use the bathroom? That term is not in use much anymore, and heaven only knows how it came into being.

  • packy, short for package store, with bottles going into paper bags or packages.

  • I went to a University ( GO UCONN! ) which is comprised of many colleges, one for each major. When you fill out job applications they ask if you have a college degree, no mention of university. What has always been interesting is how in the US we put the word “the” or “a” in front of hospital and university but not so for college or school. Brits…[Read more]

  • as far as Indian’s preferences: the Nations and Tribes are just that, independent of each other, with alliances along the way.. Then along came whites, grouped all of them together and labeled them Indians. Anyways, no Indians were consulted about changing things to another label. The feeling is that they were labeled once by white folks an do…[Read more]

  • a grinder is a hot or cold large sandwich on a long roll (torpedo or submarine shape), split and layered with veggies, meats, cheeses, meatballs, sausages, whatever you want. They are also called also called subs (like the ones served at Subway shops) as well as heroes. In CT and some other areas in New England, it is called a grinder. Yes, a…[Read more]

  • LOL!! they would have gasped in righteous indignation to hear me ask for a doggie bag!

  • and of course I still eat grinders. Here they eat subs but where I grew up in CT we launch subs at the Naval Base in Groton. How about meals? In CT we had breakfast, lunch, and supper. No dinners at all. Here it’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner. So I interchange the words, nobody minds so long as the food is on the table.
