I am trying to make the class picnic into a dress like on the blog. How much wider would you suggest making the skirt than the blouse into order to get the gathered look you see here? http://oliverands.com/blog/2012/03/class-picnic-blouse-as-dress.html

To give you a quick answer,I read that a good gather is 1 1/2 times the bodice width but I tend to use the width of the fabric for 5 years+.

    What size are you making?

    Thanks! I’m making a size 2.

Probably 1 1/2 is best or it may be a bit full…..

I can’t wait to see it-make sure you post it in the Flickr group!

I would also suggest the 1.5 times the bodice width. Depending on the fabric thickness, I might alter that a bit. Some very fine cotton or rayon fabrics I might be inclined to go with 2 times the bodice width. For thick corduroy and such I would not go more than 1.5 times the width. In the picture you linked to, I suspect that is 1.5 times the bodice width. 🙂

Looking forward to seeing your dress. 🙂
