Help with fitting/shape

I love this new dress! And it is easy! And has contrast! And a v-neck. I might actually get it done while it is still in season . . .
The challenge is that I usually can’t wear “shift” style dresses off the rack – they always look terrible so I never sew them. I tend to be a little more rectangular in shape without the perk of being tall, leggy and athletic, so this type of shape usually doesn’t work.

Any advice on how to fit this type of shape?

I found by getting a good fit in the bust and shoulders the dress ‘skimmed’ the rest of me. It sort of tucked under my bust and hinted at a waist.

Here I had just had my 6 baby and was quite lumpy https://www.flickr.com/photos/motherof5/14999667107/in/album-72157636708064826/

See how it has gentle shaping. https://www.flickr.com/photos/motherof5/10600339674/in/album-72157636708064826/

I would fit the sides to be neat around the bust and then gently shape that out to your waist.

    I hope that helps.
