I was thinking about this as I was folding Julia’s laundry this morning, and hanging up all the same dresses that she wears over and over….

We all go through Flickr and “favorite” the creations that we like. We drool over them, gush over them. But, what do our kids actually like? What do they choose themselves?

Here’s some of my daughter’s that she wears over and over…these are in every single load of her laundry….

    Seashore Sundress – http://www.flickr.com/photos/janice4839/8726756789/

Roller Skate – http://www.flickr.com/photos/janice4839/8586794484/ – she wears this one all the time, but refuses to make the other one I made her…

    Bubble Dress – http://www.flickr.com/photos/janice4839/7767848098/

    Jump Rope – http://www.flickr.com/photos/janice4839/7383575392/

I’ve been trying to find the common thread between these dresses….I really want to make clothes she likes, but it really seems random and unpredictible!!

    What about your kids?

My 3 year old loves all her Tea party, bubble dress and roller skate dresses. She always picks these to wear everyday. Although lately she has been wanting to wear her Easter dress which will not happen at the house to play in! I am working on a fancy princess dress for her and she has asked me to make three more. She does loves these.

Right now, the two roller skate dresses and hula hoop skirts I’ve made are in constant rotation. But she seems to go in spells. Before this, she wanted to wear her hopscotch skirts all the time.

Zara wears her FairyTale dress when ever she goes out, even over skinny jeans for casual! http://www.flickr.com/photos/motherof5/8390443947/in/set-72157632806526123

Liddy and Tilly love their 2+2 blouses.

They do up each others buttons.

Janice, I have a feeling our daughters would be best friends if we lived nearby. We are a dress-only household. At least where my 3.5-yr-old is concerned. And they better have some pink in them. She has handed down most of her mama-sewn dresses to her sister, but her remaining handmade favorites (including non-O+S) are:

    Seashore: http://www.flickr.com/photos/23557464@N03/8924802418/

    Junebug: http://www.flickr.com/photos/23557464@N03/8053502744/

That aside, she did just pick out my cut of Lisette Paperboats fabric for her next dress. I am thrilled because I love that print … but skeptical she will actually wear the finished product given the dearth of pink and purple.

DD2 (2.5 yrs) is easier – she pretty much wears anything, including the Lazy Days skirt I made her. I can even get her to wear the Sailboat pants I made DD1 last year! Too bad they don’t fit over her cloth diaper. (Also I am super-excited because she picked out a tobacco colored chambray from my stash for her next dress; and I think it will make an adorable Bubble!)

My son (almost 5) will wear pretty much anything. He wears his Sketchbook shirts for special occasions but otherwise it’s T-shirts, short or long sleeve. The favourites always seem to be ones with some dreadful print that my MIL brought back from overseas. I’m hoping to outcompete with some space shuttle stencilling! He seems to always choose the Field Trip Cargo pants over other pants but doesn’t seem to care which.

Miss 2 and a bit who declares herself to be a big boy now, is the unpredictable creature. Whether she likes an outfit seems to depend entirely on what happens when she wears it. She seems to prefer pants/jeans and a top but does like to “ballerina” around in a skirt. Some dresses are flatly rejected, but if I wrangle it onto her for a party it then becomes the party dress and she loves it.

She definitely seems to like this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/79480359@N03/8092859130/ and yes, it’s one of my least favourites (too girly for me)

They both ADORE their pyjamas here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/79480359@N03/8762139887/ and here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/79480359@N03/8762139887/ . A rare double happy win

My 6 year old loves knits, so the hopscotch dresses get the most wear. She loves her hopscotch nightgowns too. I made a couple sleeveless ones for summer.

My 4 year old cares less. She likes her badminton top, but has started shredding the ribbons. Oh dear.

My 3.5 can’t get enough of her roller skate dresses.

I think with Noah he loves the sketchbook shorts for summer and will wear the shirts for good but not at home which is fine by me. He likes the field trip trousers but the afterschool trousers even though he looks great in them get him confused with front and back because there is no faux fly. The field trip tops are also a favourite.

For Imogen she likes the Afterschool trousers and top, class picnic set and the hopscotch tops. The hopscotch dresses she uses for nightwear and finds them very comfortable. For dresses she really likes the croquet dress and the icecream dress but will not wear the School photo dress which is a real shame because it looks so good on her. The fairy tale dresses are a bit hit and miss. She wont wear the “love” print one I made her but adores the one I made for Christmas! Like I said hit and miss. The rollerskate dresses were popular as was the pinwheel dresses last summer/ Autumn but she hasnt worn them since.

I don’t know if she really has a favorite. She just loves pretty clothes in general. Some days she’s as happy in jeggings and a top but most of the time it has to be a pretty dress. Bonus points if its pink or has a bow or has some animal she likes. I imagine she prefers something she can move and play in, but I don’t offer anything else really. She is pleased with the roller skate dresses and like the old ice cream dresses too. It only gets vetoed if its too hard to get over her big head and she gets scared of it. She is starting to show interest it skirts, mainly because she can get them on herself.
