I should start a list of stupid things I’ve done while developing new patterns. It would start with sewing a zipper completely closer earlier this week…

This is my first post, and I just came across this thread while looking for something else. I can’t tell you how much better I feel reading all these!
Most recently, I was sewing the Sunday Brunch jacket, and I sewed my bias tape beautifully around the facing. I’d accidentally started on the front and topstitched the back, but it looked pretty…[Read more]

Hi Natalia,
I would suggest that you refer to our size chart to determine the right size. You can compare that to the finished measurement chart to determine how much ease you want. The waist can be raised or lowered as needed. You might want to make a muslin, first, if you’re unsure. I sometimes ask S to put an elastic around her waist, over the…[Read more]

Hello! I am making the Sunny Day shorts for my 9 year old daughter. I have come here looking for help picking what size to make because the pattern has finished measurements, and I don’t know how much ease I should allow for. My daughter is tall and thin and her actual waist is 22 1/2 inches, her upper hip is 25 1/4″, and the fullest part of her…[Read more]

mlinton replied to the topic Adding length to the front yoke when doing FBA in the cinema dress in the forum liesl + co: cinema dress 7 years ago
I think you are right, you need to add length to the yoke piece to line up with the added length at the waist level on the side panel.
I think in step 4, where you add length, you want to slash higher than shown, anywhere between bust level and the notch that will line up with the bottom of the center yoke. Then you can add the same length to…[Read more]

Sorry, I just saw this! Yes, with dressmaking muslin you don’t wash it. You can iron it just fine, but the sizing gives it nice stiffness to make it easier for making muslins. It sounds like I really need to do a full tutorial about making a muslin–I’ll put it on my list for a video class, ok?

Well, my all-time favorite needles are a bit pricey but so luxurious to use. Have you tried the Tulip Hiroshima needles yet? Amazingly sharp. Their embroidery needles in assorted sizes (7, 8, 9, 10) are my favorites. But I’m surprised that you can’t find ordinary steel needles at Joann! Yikes!

Hello everyone
I noticed after I opened a package of hand sewing needles, that I purchased at Joann’s, they are covered in something that looks like shiny metal but feels like plastic. I’m trying to find regular hand sewing needles. Can anyone suggest a brand name and where I can find these needles? They said at Joann’s that I can buy a pin cushi…[Read more] -

I got 2.5 yards of lovely Liberty yesterday! I can’t get over how silky it is!
I also got several yards of a lightweight muslin for pattern altering. Unwashed, it’s fairly crisp, and I could see that as being advantageous for marking/pinning etc. Since I’m planning to use the muslin for pattern pieces, not for wearing, can I/should I skip the…[Read more]

I got the cinema dress pattern and carefully reading the FBA instructions (as I have to do one 🙂
In the process of doing the fba, a length is added to the front side panel in two places – at the waist (stage 4) and at the curved front edge of the pattern piece (stage 5, when the dart is “closed), but a length is added to the front yoke only in…[Read more] -

I’m still not clear where you’re getting stuck. Are you on page 43, step 8? If so, the inside of the placket will show for now, just like it does on the coordinating illustration. Once you’ve sewn the neckline with the neck facing you’ll turn the placket right side out again so it doesn’t show anymore. If this isn’t where you’re getting stuck, can…[Read more]
