Thanks everyone! I have my sketch drawn out and I am starting it this weekend, I am going to be adding a few extra pockets to his and I think it should come out juts fine. (I hope!) He really needs a book bag and this is his birthday present, late.

This is unscientific, but I’d size it up by measuring the width of his back, and then from his shoulders to the small of his back and go from there to just eyeball it. Heidi’s comment made me think of this: http://www.slate.com/articles/life/cool_story/2013/10/two_straps_on_a_backpack_or_one_strap_what_s_cool.html
Messenger bags were cooler when I…[Read more] -

I improvised a larger bag for my four-year-old. It needed to carry a folder and lunch bag. I sketched out the size I wanted, and used the instructions to guide my sewing. It got a bit fiddly when I attached the lining to the zipper, but it looks good.

Sharon,
I used the backpack pattern recently and had no trouble adding an extra pocket to the front. Admittedly, I used the pattern to make a ‘cow’ backpack and not a more grown-up version that would appeal to a school-aged child! However, I think you could easily lengthen the body of the backpack and add a more functional zipped pocket to the…[Read more] -

I made this shirt for my daughter http://www.flickr.com/photos/motherof5/7948860068/in/photostream/

I used the Sketchbook shirt collar and sandwiched it between the facing.

Hubby just had to cut up a couple of trees on our lot so, it seemed a good excuse to have a first ever NYE party here. There were lots of kids, dogs, food, and a BIG bonfire. To stay off the roads and be safe the majority of our guests crashed here in a little “tent city” in our back lot. The children were all so excited and surprisingly well…[Read more]

Our Biggies had a New Years Eve party and I think we may make a tradition of that. They had a lot of fun and so did Jed and I.
Happy New Years, sweet sewing friends!

Size 6-12m Seashore sundress, Sunday Brunch Jacket and Tea Party Bloomers from 1.55m of 110cm pinwale courduroy. I did fold half the fabric both sides to the middle to get the extra folds needed because a number of pieces need to be cut on the fold. I also cut the seashore dress facing/lining pieces from contrasting fabric as well as any bias…[Read more]

I have one of the snap setting tools that you tap with a hammer. It is quite easy and satisfying, but the snaps don’t hold in thick fabric. The top snap of the family reunion dress has to go through a lot of layers. I find it easier to use the sew in snaps for that top snap.
