If I’m mixing patterns I try to keep collars with their matching necklines and sleeves with their armholes.
So here’s how I’d do it…
Pick a collar from another pattern. Music Class, Jump Rope, Fairy Tale etc.
Trace the Apple Picking pattern with the modifications you want.
Lay your tracing over the bodice part of the pattern you’ve chosen the…[Read more] -

I have not made the Apple Picking Dress but I did add a Peter Pan collar to the Family Reunion dress. I did not need to add any length to the collar to accommodate for thicker fabric, but there was some tricky math. I wrote a tutorial for the Oliver+S blog which you can find here:…[Read more]

Good point Sarvi, Becky have a look here http://fiveandcounting-motherof5.blogspot.com.au/2012/01/how-you-bechickadee.html you can see how the collar is shaped.
To add a collar I would sew the shoulder seams and complete the front placket of the dress. I would then open the garment up a lie it flat.
Then take the collar of the Jumprope or Music…[Read more] -

Have you already made the apple-picking dress? The opening of the button placket is off-center, so the back of the collar would be asymmetrical — just something to bear in mind (I have a very pretty blouse with an asymmetrical collar, it can look very nice). Afraid I’ve never done a collar from scratch so no other suggestions, but will watch this…[Read more]

I might be a nerd but I actually love the ‘sausage’ posts. I actually think this is one of things about food blogging that is so interesting — every time Deb Perelman posts on Smitten Kitchen she gets 300 questions about why do you do this? what happens if I do that? and you start to understand the dish and the process really differently than if…[Read more]

BeckyinFL replied to the topic Preventing bodice lining from rolling into view at arm and neck holes in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 11 years ago
Thank you all for your replies. I guess I needn’t have worried. I did clip and trim closely, and the lining seems to be staying on the inside of the garment with no inclination to peek outward. I didn’t under-stitch at the front neck opening (stitch the facing to the seam allowance for a little way, as the pattern instructs) because, silly me, I’d…[Read more]

I want to draft a Peter Pan collar for the apple picking dress. (I love that dress as is, but this is a special project.) The collar will lie flat against the dress. What I’m wondering is if I can simply duplicate the neckline of the bodice or if I need to make the neck of the collar piece a little larger in diameter. If dresses were made of…[Read more]

Like Nicole says, it’s always best to check if you’re using a new pattern.
This is probably more information about how the sausage is made than you want to know, but what the heck. If you’re interested in a behind-the-scenes look, keep reading.

That is so fascinating about the ASTM children’s clothing standards, @todd. Does a similar standard exist for adult patterns?
-
@kahawa101, yes adult versions of the standards exist too.

Well I wouldn’t use the pattern I did! I managed it but it was a chore. Here it is: https://www.flickr.com/photos/64920483@N03/15280869470/
I would like to see how the Amy Butler one works out, the style is lovely.

Thanks ladies. Katybellabug do you hace a pattern you particularly like for making a raincoat? Nicole I think I remember seeing that coat, did you blog it? (one night some of the kids and I read a heap of your posts accompanied by lots of appreciative comments!). Does the top stitching effect its waterproofness. Or did you use something else to…[Read more]

Thanks Nicole!
I did put a drawstring in my hood, and am so thankful. I can walk into the wind and rain and that hood doesn’t budge! I can cinch the drawstring in with a toggle and it holds it nice and tight.
I wish I had put an internal pocket in mine as I am always a bit worried about my phone getting wet.
I agree about the topstitching and…[Read more]
