I finally got to sew on the buttons of those little bubble dresses. The sewing room was like an oven yesterday so didn’t do alot of actual sewing. My sister is making curtains for me – once I give her the window measurements.

Today though, I really plan to get in and sew the puppet show outfit. It seems to be cooler today but the aircon will…[Read more]

  • In terms of Quickness:
I usually do the the bodice from the Bubble Dress or Music Box Dress with a gathered or pleated skirt. (I usually just hand stitch the lining in the bodice to avoid edge stitching.) Both styles can work with long sleeves underneath in cold weather and alone when it’s warmer.

    In terms of favorites:
The Roller Skate is fun…[Read more]

It’s rough not having a good nights sleep…for both mom and kid! I hope the suggestions help, Jane. The Gro clock was going to be my piece of advice. It’s helped a lot of my friends with older kids (not baby/toddler) stay in bed.

  • Hi ladies,
Which book would you recommend on using an over locker/serger? I don’t want one that has ‘projects’ to make, but I like a nice meaty read, so something comprehensive.

I am a beginner though have been using my machine fairly well so far, for basic stuff. I can thread it OK. It’s a Juki 634DE, though I don’t know if thats of any…[Read more]

We are crazy co-sleepers here too, though we kicked them out at about 3 yrs old. I agree…you can’t stop her from waking, but you can stop her from waking you. My oldest (now 7) still wakes up from time to time. I keep a little box in the living room with a blanket and pillow. I find her in all sorts of places in the mornings…the couch, the…[Read more]

  • Hello, I’m wanting to sew a narrow piece of cotton lace across the pocket. My initial thought was to sew it on top of where the top stitching will be, or to baste the pocket and sew on the lace at the same time as sewing that line of top stitching.

I really want to do french seams for this dress, and I am worried that adding the lace where I…[Read more]

Sounds like the same mistake I made McStitch!

I’m pretty disappointed as we’re doing a gift exchange and my draw didn’t update her list until yesterday. I didn’t realize the items on her wishlist when I shopped (early for once!) were last year’s and I can’t return them. I hate the idea of disappointing her and I’m usually a pretty good gift giver.

These are all such good tips and I would definitely do something like sew the wrong parts together or in the wrong order.

Thank you so much, I will go shopping in my stash!

  • I made the jacket in a thick, soft knit (almost like fleece) and lined it with lightweight wool jersey. It was so comfy looking.
I also goofed and sewed the body parts into tubes and the sleeves into something else. Thick, soft knits are nightmares to unpick! Pay attention to the instructions!

I’m sewing the jacket up in chambray lined with a sherpa fleece similar to this http://www.purlsoho.com/purl/products/item/3724-Michael-Miller-Organic-Sherpa

I have to say I’ve already made a mistake on it once (too tired, sewed the arms shut…) and it was impossible to unpick, however it looks as though it will be gorgeously toasty.

    I love…[Read more]

You are so sweet Jane. I hope you get some more sleep soon.

  • Nicole replied to the topic Winter Lullaby in the forum oliver + s: lullaby 11 years ago

I used a rigid rugby knit for Trixie’s jacket, it is very warm.

@Jane I don’t know what it’s like where you live, but round here they say the average leaving home age is now 27!! :0
Makes sense to have some kind of plan to work towards improving things before then!
My daughter was a really early riser for the first two years. There was no chance of her going back to sleep, so we took turns putting her in the…[Read more]

Speaking of gift shopping throughout the year, I think I have made a head start on next year already. I decided this would be the year to seriously downsize on the amount of money I spend on my kids. I generally have a limit for extended family members but go all out for murray and the kids. This year, not so as doctors visits have taken quite a…[Read more]

I knew I would get some good advice here and I have. Thank you all from the bottom of my tired heart. 🙂

I had never heard of a GroClock before, what a wonderful idea. I talk her every night about staying in bed until the sun is up, but maybe something a little more concrete that she can see right in front of her would help. She is interested in…[Read more]

Nicole, I love the Aden + anais swaddles! I also have a sleepsack (wearable blanket) by the same company. So lovely and lightweight for summer babies.

Working on/buying gifts throughout the year is a smart idea!
