Don’t be too intimidated — I personally find the Tea Party bodice curve trickier to sew than any part of the Fairy Tale. It’s just a lot of steps if you want to do all the options, collar, sleeves, sash, and tulle. But no individual step is that hard to sew, and indeed I think of the plainer versions without the extras as being one of the easier sews.

  • Thank you all for your helpful links and suggestions. I ordered the vintage butterick style, since the bodice most closely resembles the one in the dress. I can make the other modifications (definitely losing the pointy waist!) but was unsure how to create that wrap-around piece. I guess I know what the “generation gap” is now…………..when styles…[Read more]

Thanks, Yirg, for asking on my behalf. I was actually able to find a paper copy on amazon (US) and will get it by tomorrow. It is going to be my daughter´s birthday dress (in June, so plenty of time for practice). I´m excited and intimidated by the difficulty but these patterns have come highly recommended. I hope I can make the pattern justice.

I have changed my mind about the miracle blanket! My baby is a regular little Houdini! So I think ditching the idea of making one is a very good idea and using the cut pieces for something else.

I am also currently trying to convince the eldest daughter to let me make her first formal dress – this is definitely not the time to improvise with no…[Read more]

Oh wow, some sweet dresses and equally sweet little girls.

It will make a lovely music box dress – I have used lawn/voile for this pattern three times, and it makes a lovely, floaty summer…[Read more]

This is pretty too http://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/9786 ( but I don’t have it)

I have a Burda pattern, with a separate bolero, you may have.

    http://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/9785 if it will work.

I do see it goes from an 11…. may be a bit big.

oh durrr, you could also use the Garden Party pattern as a jumping-off point, just without the gathers in the bodice.

i was able to zoom in on the Sears pic and it looks like it is a curved band that wraps completely around to take the place of a cap sleeve, gathered/pinched in the front. [I was in love with a version of this for my senior high school ball, but it did not turn out at all. :(]
I think the best candidate for modifying into this is the Croquet…[Read more]

Hi Erin. Lawn is lovely to sew with but may I suggest you spend a little more and look for a Japanese lawn? It will have a little more body and be easier to handle.

If you are new to sewing children’s clothes, may I be so bold as to show you my tute’s for some of the O+S patterns? I go through the directions, step by step and you can email me if…[Read more]

I think the biggest issue with sewing on buttons is the choking hazard if they come loose? At least that is the reasoning I have heard for why baby clothes should have snaps that will not budge easily.
I use resin snaps and snap pliers — did not have luck with the tubey setting tool or pliers by Dritz and ring-type snaps at all.

Fixed the hyperlink, now the pattern number should take you to your intended link. (Turns out it needed the http bit.)

Fixed the hyperlink, now the pattern number should take you to your intended link… or rather, the html looks right but it’s not working, how odd. Let me try again.

Butterick website has a pattern sale on right now! It seems like you can buy the new Lisette ones. I’m currently wondering if the fancy dress might be the perfect thing for some Marsala colored linen in my stash. I mean, if I have the color of the year, I ought to have a dress out of it!

  • Found it! I meant Butteick, which are on sale right now on the website.

Why on earth won’t my link appear? Whatever, google butterick 3351.

It doesn’t have that princess pointy waist, but it has the wrap around sleeve concept, whatever that may be called. And the pointy waist is a little too costume like for my taste on what is meant to be a…[Read more]
