Linda is spot on. The only thing I would add is that some yarns are inherently very firm and some grow/bloom in counterintuitive way so also block your swatch. Even a half or a third of a stitch off (in width — row gauge is better handled in inches, I think) can add up so much more quickly than it seems it should.

I second left-handed shears. I would also like snaps a little smaller and lighter than the size O+S currently stocks. Other ideas: packs of ideal-sized white or shell buttons for button-up-the-back dresses; small cord made especially for piping.

I read recently a suggestion someone had for marking the shoulder line on the bubble dress. They sewed a basting stitch through the pattern and fabric together then clipped the threads to remove the pattern. There were thread bits left in the fabric that marked the line. Thanks Linda! This is helpful. I usually do a smaller swatch (varies in width, but probably closer to 4 inches in length) and then count stitches for an inch and multiply. I am almost finished a pair of sailboats for my daughter, had anyone done adjustable elastic? I’ve been looking for notchers like that but have had trouble finding any in my part of the world. Maybe it’s an issue of translation – I have no idea what they would be called in Swedish.

If O+S were to carry them I would pick up a pair in no time!

So, I have gotten around the marking issue by using pins on crucial spots and avoiding really mark-heavy patterns. But I want to make some more complex clothes and marks are inevitable.
