Could you finish the neckline and wrists with bias (or jersey equivalent) and tuck the edges of the scarf-like bit in there?

Now I can definitely see why you are thinking hopscotch dress! I agree:)
For the drapes you could attach them at the back before you add the neck binding, although this may pull the neck backwards. I would be tempted to add a seam to the back of the dress, in line with the armhole notches and sew the drape in there.
This would allow it to hang…[Read more] -

Well, I should officially be the poster child for not sewing while sick.
After looking at the pattern pieces, I decided to cut size 5 with 6 length, since she always outgrows length first.
Yeah, I wasnt payong attention and thought I cut the waistband, and instead trimmed off my added length. Size 5 it is! Lol.
And now I cant fet the…[Read more]

That you are even seriously thinking of this project while you are unwell, Jess, is real heroism! And yes, I know about the vivid dreams consequent on certain types of cough syrup. I made 3 sets in different sizes of SO pj’s a couple of years ago. It’s such a roomy pattern allover that it often looks longer on kids even the leggy ones. You could…[Read more]

Hi everyone, I haven’t been able to contribute to these forums for the last three weeks as I have been house, and dog-sitting. Home today, hurray!! No sewing done during this period whatsoever; but I have been able to trace, draft, and cut out nearly 30 outfits – all neatly packaged in sturdy plastic bags – you know the ones with the…[Read more]

Okay, okay, this is getting the creative juices flowing. Thank you! I’m off to the fabric store today to see what I can find. Thank goodness my other daughter decided to be Hermione so we can use last year’s Harry Potter costume 🙂
For the record, here is her vision

Well I managed to double dip and get Sarvi’s size 5 project covered as well with my monochrome swingset.
I’ve always thought a lovely sewing community idea would be a “skill swap”. In the way that quilters swap quilt blocks, or people swap handmade gifts. In my swap idea (which I’m not volunteering to organise cause I think it could get really…[Read more] -

I haven’t done it but I think it will work really well. Whether you put elastic in will depend on how good the recovery of your ribbing is, and how much faith you have in it not stretching out over time.

@aprilshowers firstly, that is one fabulous idea for a costume. What a smart kid.
I’d start with a raglan sleeve pattern and then cut and split the front and back and sleeves to widen them. Then use elastic inside a casing around the neck to bring it all back in.
The art smock in Little Things To Sew is much like this. Or you could do it with the…[Read more] -

nzsewist replied to the topic pretreating wool for coat – help! in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 10 years ago
I hand wash mine in wool wash and dry flat (a trampoline sounds like a great idea!) before cutting and sewing. With whatever lining I’m using too, although sometimes I separate them if I’m worried about any colour coming out. If colour does come out of the wool then I keep washing until it stops shedding dye or add some white vinegar and salt to…[Read more]

I’m making N a whole stack of these shorts for kindy from some french terry sweatshirting that I had in my stash. I’ve got ribbing that matches the terry and I’m wondering if it might work to make the waistband from that. Would I still need to put some elastic in the waistband?
I can just do a trial run and see what happens but I thought I would…[Read more]

Annabel Langbein’s Ultimate Chocolate Cake
I always make the cake or cakes a few weeks in advance, wrap in cling film and then freeze until the day before. I’ve made this one in both 27cm (entire recipe) and 20cm (recipe split into thirds) tins. I’ve also staked two 27cm cakes, and you could…[Read more]
