Hi Rose, congratulations on your soon-to-be-new-baby. A good place to start would be to download one of the free Oliver + S pattern like the Popover Sundress (link: https://oliverands.com/free-patterns/popover-sundress/ ). The size starts at Size 2, but it will be a good beginner project and the perfect way to introduce yourself to the fabulous…[Read more]

Hi guys,
I don’t know how to sew a dress, but I want to start learning sewing because after a few months I am going to deliver a baby.
So I want to make a dress for my baby.
So please suggest me some online sewing tutorials from where I can start learning?
Thanks

I would love to write that book and hope to have the chance someday! A Building Block Dress book for women would be amazing, I think.

I would really recommend that you get the book. Here is why- not only do you learn about techniques, but I feel like you learn why you do what you do. For me, the learning the why is the key. It helps me understand what I am doing and apply it more broadly than just copying another pattern.
My child is a narrow string bean with a long rise…[Read more]

I do write occasional tutorials or blog posts showing how I altered one of our patterns for myself. Here is one:
Many of the techniques from the Building Block Dress book would be useful for altering women’s patterns as well. The book might help you to…[Read more]

Hi Jes,
I know what you’re saying! All sizes need support. You have the opposite problem that we have at our house, but ironically the fix is similar. On pages 12-13 of the book there is a section on lengthening and shortening a pattern. Where I usually need to lengthen a smaller size, you’ll be shortening a larger size. Also, on pages 9-11 there…[Read more]

Hey there! Yes, I can see that the sleeves have drag lines that are coming more from the shoulder than the top of the sleeve. This is probably partly a function of the kimono sleeve, which doesn’t really allow for a true sleeve cap. Based on the photos, I’m thinking you might need a larger size because you have a wider shoulder. As a result, right…[Read more]

I wondered if someone could take a look at my pictures and tell me what you think is wrong with my sleeves? This is my first time making this pattern with the long sleeve option, and something just looks wrong, almost like they are twisted. My sleeve pattern piece seems to be perfectly symmetrical, and there are no notches designating front and…[Read more]

I have been debating about purchasing this book for a while now but am hesitating because I can’t seem to find any information in the forums about adjusting the block pattern for plus size girls. Is this covered at all in the book? I have used a few Oliver and s patterns to sew for my daughter who is 9 in the past, and tried my best to adjust and…[Read more]

Thank you, Liesl!. This makes sense now, and it’s nice to hear the original motivation behind the decision.

Apologies for the silence! I’m back from multiple trips (finally) and recovering from a cold, so I’ve been absent more than usual.
Anyway, excellent question! It’s been so long since we released this pattern, I haven’t given it much thought in a while. But I just went back and glanced at the pieces. We released them as full pattern pieces because…[Read more]

Okay–so I’m sewing the Ice Cream Dress for the first time and I’m wondering….is there some reason why none of the pattern pieces are set up to cut out on a fold? I’m a beginning sewist, so I’m not familiar with all justifications for pattern layout. I was just thinking that it would make layout and cutting easier, and allow me to be more…[Read more]
