I love racer backs, all my favorite tops and dresses have them. I find that if I situate my straps appropriately they barely show, but I wouldn’t care if they did. I do have a little clip thingy that hooks on the straps between the shoulder blades for fancier affairs at which visible straps might be a faux pas.

I’m sewing nothing! We are moving this summer and I had to pack away all the sewing machines and supplies to make the apartment more palatable to buyers who dont consider that stuff reasonable decor. Can you imagine?! 😉 I made the mistake of ordering two things from Spoonflower knowing that I couldn’t do anything with them. So now they’re just sitting here taunting me.

I have a Rowenta and I hate it. It has leaked almost since day 1. I’m of the opinion that if I pay $100 for an iron, it shouldn’t need “hacks” or coddling to do what I need it to do. The next one I buy will be a gravity feed, which means I’ll be sticking with this damn Rowenta until we get a new home with enough space for such a thing.
The feminism aspect of all this is pretty funny. I’m a staunch feminist; I get on many a nerve in my family when some issue “gets me going.” But now I’m a stay-at-home mom who sews, bakes and keeps the house. That’s some serious internal conflict. Feminism means making our own choices though! So if what you want is an iron, you get yourself an iron!! 🙂

I agree with Tamara and Jill that getting her input is the key to success. This is a difficult time for me in sewing for my 7 because she is very specific in what she wants, and she isn’t interested in anything she considers even remotely stuffy or formal. That translates mostly as no woven fabrics; almost everything in her closet is knit sportswear. I’ve made more Playtime dresses than I can count, but I make them short and without sleeves. She’s also big on fabric selection – that will make or break whether she wears something. She’s into cozy fleece right now. Tamara’s suggestion of showing her photos is helpful – we go through the Mini Boden, Hanna Andersen, Tea, etc. catalogs and get ideas that way.
All that is not to say that I don’t purchase clothes for her. Frankly, that is the majority of her closet now. She just isn’t into handmade things like she used to be, and I’m not going to waste my time with things that won’t be worn. I’d rather sew for myself if that’s the case. 😉

This is great. My top four images are of Washi dresses, which are just all around hideous. I guess they’re not inherently that ugly but they looked like potato sacks on me and were donated to Goodwill long ago. My most “favorited” image is a pair of Puppet Show shorts in linen with a big bow on the waistband. I loved those little shorts so much, but I bet they were worn once.

I just wanted to jump in here and say that I’ve probably never slept through the night without being medicated. I’m just not a good sleeper. I didn’t sleep when I was a kid either; I was always worried about one thing or another. Fortunately for my parents I was also a very stoic child so I never got up and bothered them. 😉
Anywho, have you tried teaching her some relaxation exercises? It may be that she is legitimately waking a lot and needs some help in getting herself back to sleep. I’m thinking breathing exercises, yoga poses you can do lying down, etc.
Good luck!

I wear these kind of leggings almost every day – I’m wearing them right now! Hopefully the attached will show you what the two sides of the fabric look like. I did a quick search and found yardage here: http://www.nancysnotions.com/product/kelly+polartec+power+stretch+fabric.do

Here are some boats at Girl Charlee, designed by them and made in Los Angeles. They also have another print with a pink background; don’t how your son would feel about that.

I love the Vanamo! I wish I had a reason to wear a two-piece cocktail dress. I also love all their tops and have three or four on my “to do” list.

Oh for myself it would be Dior and Marc Jacobs. I would hire someone to pick out a bunch of stuff and then try it on at home and decide what I wanted to keep. I really don’t like shopping and I don’t think I would have the patience that couture fittings would require. 😉

It looks like we will have to wait until the broadcast is finished – I can’t view it here in the US on bbc.co.uk or YouTube. I’ll have to schedule a little reminder to look it up later!

So, if anyone cares 🙂 I did end up finally designing a giant polka dot fabric on Spoonflower. I haven’t ordered it yet but will be sure to report back on how it turns out. http://www.spoonflower.com/designs/2876434
