My little boy is currently obsessed with boats and I’d like to make him a set of pajamas using the leggings for the bottom and the school bus tee for the top. But I’m having a hard time finding a knit with boats on it.

Anyone have tips on good online places to find quality knits? I’d love to use something like the Hanna Andersson OKO-TEX, but can us home sewers find fabric like that?

    thanks!

I’m not familiar with the designer you’ve mentioned, but this company does lots of funky knits and might well have some boats. I’ve not been able to so a search as my phone doesn’t want today ball!

    Try naturesfabric.com and thefabricfairy.com.

At the moment, there is a pirate-themed Ooga Booga line, and I think I saw some pirate/viking prints from Lillestoffe earlier this summer. Some of these are OKO-TEK certified, like HA clothing. Those substrates are, absolutely, available to home sewists.

I am very hesitant to purchase organic fabrics, as growing organics requires more water and more labor than growing conventional cotton. The increased labor demands of organic cotton cultivation mean organic cotton is more likely to be grown using forced, slave, and/or child labor. Please be very cautious when purchasing organic cotton.

    Thanks for the links!

I hadn’t thought about that aspect of organic cotton. I’ve thought that it was better for the farm workers because of the reduced exposure to toxic pesticides.

And I just found a blog post by Liesl on this very subject! I knew reading the whole backlog of O+S blog posts would come in useful:

Here are some boats at Girl Charlee, designed by them and made in Los Angeles. They also have another print with a pink background; don’t how your son would feel about that.

That’s just perfect, thank you! And the prices there seem quite reasonable too, bonus.
