Sarvi

  • Nicole replied to the topic Kids Sewing Kit Ideas in the forum off topic 11 years ago

I am with Sarvi on this one. I let my children use sharp knives, scissors, pins under supervision, from a young age. They learn how to handle them and are often better as they work better then blunt.
    Otherwise, it sounds awesome.

My only suggestion is some pre-cut felt pieces so they can get stitching straight away.
How lovely, what a special…[Read more]

ps She didn’t really sleep well until Matilda moved in with her, they share a bed.
I think she was about 6 then. We co-sleep, like Sarvi.

Different children settle at different ages. Liddy took a long time to sleep through the night. She would wake up and miss me.
In the end I put a cot mattress under my bed and a quilt and told her she was welcome to make a nest on the floor but to please not wake me.
I think by 5 a child is old enough to have explained you need sleep to be a happy…[Read more]

  • For posterity’s sake, this issue was due to a minor labeling error on the initial release of the pattern. Details can be found here:

    Finished waist too small

The issue has been corrected now and future downloads of the pattern will be of the revised version.

  • The pattern has now been corrected to show the correct size labels on the center front and center back pleats.

If you purchased the pattern prior to this posting, you can use your link to download and save an updated copy of the pattern. (The only changes are to the pleat size labels on pages 25, 41, and 51 of the PDF file.)

    For anyone…[Read more]

  • Ladies, I’ve finally found the problem! It’s quite simple. And totally silly on my party. I reversed the size labels for the center front and center back pleats, so the lines and dots that are labelled size 0 should actually be size 20. And vice versa.

I’m so sorry about this! Thanks for your patience while I figured it out. The good news is…[Read more]

  • Nicole replied to the topic What are you sewing now? in the forum off topic 11 years ago

Summer cleaning and Christmas parties have whacked my sewing time with a big stick.
I hope to start my cousins Christmas dress today. I have made three muslins to get the bodice right and I am so pleased with the fit (so far).

    Looking forward to Roger!

I do a similar method to Deb but I pin the darts on the outside, then mark the lines on the inside with tailors chalk and transfer the adjustments to the inside.

The same as Deb, this is my method, not necessarily a correct method.

I have not done enough fitting to help you with your particular problem.
I have not made the dress…[Read more]

Perhaps get the dress on your daughter (inside out) before unpicking anything so you can play around by pinching dart and other areas first to see exactly where some re-construction is needed. That’s what I would do.
Then unpick the darts you mentioned if necessary, re-try on and pin to fit.

Hopefully in the meantime someone who has made this…[Read more]

I haven’t made this dress. However when I’ve made a dress that needs some fine tuning, I turn it inside out, put it on the wearer and then pin like crazy making new darts, or wider side seams or raising shoulder seams – whatever the dress needs to make it fit better by using pins.
After the pinning process, mark those areas with wash out…[Read more]

  • Or to save them, you could always take a smaller front and back pleat. Those pleats are very forgiving.

I’m going to take another look at this today to make sure it’s correct. Everything looks right, but I think I should walk the pattern to be absolutely sure, since it’s causing you problems.

Difficult to determine the exact type of fabric but you’ll find something that looks similar in the bridal section of a fabric store.
A quick search say’s the dress designer is Christopher Lawrence and he found a vintage cut-out fabric (the circles) that he lay over the dress top and the hem section is airbrushed in a pattern he calls hidden…[Read more]

    How did it go Sarvi?

On a scarier note, I hope no one was caught up in the horrid situation in Sydney, AUS.

  • Did you taper off the edge of the dart slowly and tie the ends of it by hand rather than backstitching? If not, that might be the problem. Maybe if you take a photo we might be able to troubleshoot.

I would check out bridal fabric stores.
