I’ve been a long time away from sewing for kids – about as long as Adelaide has been without rain 🙁 but I began a pair of the Lunchbox culottes yesterday. Size 4 in cotton poplin. This is my first attempt of this pattern, and I’m pleased with it so far. I particularly like the design of the inseam pockets – the skirt to pocket seams are well…[Read more]

  • Many decades ago, my school performed Noah’s Flood (B Brittain). With so many different animals, costumes were a problem. Solved by masks that were worn sort’ve on top of our heads (paper mache), and bodies in simple A-line tunics over leotards with long sleeves, and legs. I simply cannot remember what we did for shoes – I know bare feet would not…[Read more]

Yowie, T! A cyclone. Help! Really sorry to hear about M’s bike; that’s serious. Admire your cool to keep sewing throughout, and looking fwd to pic of Chloe in T party dress. I’m sure the rain is welcome, but I hope wind damage is minimal.

A month’s worth of weekends (including some days of 40C in Adelaide) has seen me finish 3 quilt tops. The must do content were a tablecloth/lap quilt, and a single bed quilt for my aunt/godmother who turn 88 in May. I’ve made many quilts during the last 10-15 years, but haven’t worked on any for a year. So I’m very pleased to have these projects…[Read more]

Thank you Sarvi; for a wonderful sock knitter, check out grosel20 in the O+S Flickr group.

  • Sounds lovely. Do you have the Music Box pinafore pattern? or the 2+2 skirt pattern? That could help with good width of pleats for child – after that, it’s maths.
Hope that doesn’t sound too brutal. I made a lot of pleated skirts on a yoke during the 80’s and 90’s, and it takes a bit of work but it does work with patience, and big pieces of paper.

Goodness, I didn’t realise that was going to happen. Still, I suppose it saves time following a link – which is what I was trying to provide to my photostream.

    B is For Banksia
Cross-stitch, and quilting are my alternative activities to sewing for children. Above is my clumsy attempt to ‘show off’ ‘B is for Banksia’, completed for some dear friends with the surname ‘Brown’, in time for Christmas. I hope you can see the picture.

    Currently,…[Read more]

Happy New Year, forum members. I hope it’s a great year for families, and sewing, and that dramas of the unpleasant kind are few, and far between – as we know they can never be avoided altogether.

Thank you, T for your story about Chloe’s birth, and of course, for all the other women who have shared their experiences. I’ve never had a child, and…[Read more]

I have so many patterns already
To make clothes for Janie and Freddie
    I ought to get started
But I can’t bear to be parted from Teddy.

  • Kmac, the Music Box pinafore is a lovely pattern – and View A – pleats all around – could look very dressy in the right fabric. It’s longer than some of the other dress patterns, and could be worn over either a long or short sleeve blouse or top depending on the weather. Or you could add flutter sleeves to the shoulder line. Good luck with the project.

  • Yes, I’ve reserved the smaller sized Art Museum from same site. ” my” little boys are finally getting big enough for proper trousers, and at least one likes wearing vests. Looking forward to buying the Lunchbox culottes, too. I have a watching brief for O+S patterns on ebay but it keeps alerting me to stuffed scarecrows, and vintage patterns, as…[Read more]

  • NIcole, thank you for the heads up about O + S patterns on ebay; I struck gold with the link you provided and have bought the TParty 2-5 paper pattern. I’ve never made the dress, but have made the playsuit several times. It’s one of my favourite patterns, and with a few more little (but growing) girls to sew for, I’m looking forward making some…[Read more]

  • Tough decision, J. I’d echo all of the above re. the relationship issues- both positive and negative, and about whether it’s important to you. On the seriously plus side, as your daughter is small and slim, it will take much less fabric, and Vogue patterns are very stylish (in my opinion, especially for simple, A line frocks). I love the idea of a…[Read more]
