Hehe! Sewing snobbery rules! Nuthin’ to be ashamed of there! I do the same and apply Oliver and s sewing principals with other patterns now. Some instructions are very vague out there.
I am steadily trundling my way through the two extra pair of jeans – Jalie 2908 stretch jeans size “v” (9) and (shock horror!) Thread theory Jedediah pants in size…[Read more]

Masha, I feel like I play too, and yet… I just made a pinafore/jumper for my daughter. I think it will be a first day of dress. A beautiful cotton and steel lawn. It was not an Oliver and S pattern and boy was I, ahem, P!$$ed. I was aghast at the instructions and things like unfinished facings, and no directions to tack facings down. The…[Read more]

You know that is a great question. I certainly understand why she fussy cut across the vertical line to make sure she cut straight, and it would have been if it was printed that way.
I appreciated it actually and still do, since it wasn’t her fault. Last year, I purchased some 1/2 yard cuts of Liberty from SohoPurl when in NYC. The young woman…[Read more]

@cybele727 – I’m curious – are you happy with the way the fabric shop cut it? Because I cut large scale prints that way as well….so I’m wondering if that was a good thing to you or a bad thing…

Interfacing usually works well for me when it comes to hemming. You might need to adjust the tension on your machine for the double needle, too. I usually have to crank up the upper tension by quite a bit to balance things out. Good luck!

It will be easier I you sew a basting stitch along the seam allowance and the clip the seam allowance almost to the basting stitches before turning then to the inside.
I’m sure I’ve seen other colour velcro at Spotlight in Aus, but off white or black is most common.
Have fun with it, it’s a gorgeous pattern. -

I think that’s what Cindy did when she first enlarged it, but then found that the enlarged top section meant the straps started too low down and the bag was unbalanced.
I can’t recall if that was a discussion on here or on Siestas and Sewing blog -
Liesl Gibson replied to the topic Would you resize the LTTS back pack up? in the forum oliver + s: little things to sew 10 years ago
I would suggest a really easy route for this. If you want to enlarge it, be sure the seam allowances are drawn into the pattern piece. Then enlarge all the pieces the same percentage and draw new cut lines from the seam lines. That way everything will be enlarged so it all still fits together, but since the seam allowances will also increase you…[Read more]

Ok, thanks everyone! I may go the @sarvi route and kind of wing it a bit – I love the added pockets that Sharon did. School starts in 3 weeks….need to get cracking!

Oh no. The unpick is the worst. I am sewing another company pattern for the pinafore/jumper. And I have to go out and get new fabric because, well, because I followed the directions and they left out a critical step. I did trimming so I can’t really undo. I have to recut the neckline and facings. Oh well. That’ll teach me. The problem is…[Read more]

Yes that’s right! So the lunchbox tee in fleece would be considered a jumper or pullover (in your case a sweater) and the music box jumper is what we would consider as a pinafore.

Oh no! The things we do in a hurry! (or at least that is me!)
Yesterday I got this beautiful Cotton and Steel print in cotton lawn. I am making a jumper (pinafore??). I purposefully traced and cut and interfaced and marked yesterday. At 8:30 I stopped. Hubby asked if I was done for the night and I said, “I am tired of making mistakes… I am…[Read more]

Lightening… I love that… my love of stripes and cheap fabric…
I will check out that link and also look at the idea of soaking and stretching to match it up a bit.
But so frustrating. Especially since I made a bunch of bland boring solid skirts to be a base for school clothes, and this was supposed to be the “fun” skirt!
Nicole, I will…[Read more]

My love of stripes and cheap fabric has led me to this problem a couple of times.
With the fabric wet you may be able to realign it so that the selvedges meet and the stripes are vertical, or maybe not.
I would cut so that the striped pattern is true and figure that a small degree off straight grain is workable. - Load More
