I”ve more or less completed the Christmas doll sewing (more or less because I still vaguely want to make a few accessories to go with the outfits – I really need to start making sewing plans so that I don’t waste so much time wondering what to start on next). I’m simultaneously trying to plan my kids’ outfits for the large family portrait we are…[Read more]

Kim replied to the topic How to cut faux fur to trim hood in the forum oliver + s: school days 10 years ago
yes it has a pile but it’s a short white pile. I will cut it, as you suggest, so when I fold it in half and sew it along the edge of the hood it doesn’t stretch. I’m going to cut it vertical, thank you for your help.

In which direction would I cut a 4″x 28″ piece of faux fur, to be folded in half, that will make it 2″ wide. The faux fur I have has a stretch from salvage to salvage. Would I cut it 28″ horizontal from salvage to salvage or 28″ vertical with the grain? Thank you

with love Heidi replied to the topic Has anyone made the class picnic shorts for a boy? in the forum oliver + s: class picnic 10 years ago
I made lengthened ones for my older nephews, who were 8 and 10, last Christmas. They wore them all last summer and have been worn this summer too!
I used bias binding instead of the facing piece. I think this could work well for the younger boy too. -

Brenda – YES, I found those patterns! I used the jumper pattern for Molly (which was the original doll I owned) as the base for all the dresses I sewed and it worked great.
Good luck with your jacket. My husband has a soft shell that he loves – but it cost an arm and a leg; even $20 fabric is a bargain in comparison!
I am finding myself with…[Read more]

Any special traditions you’d like to share with us? Favorite dishes? I managed to find canned pumpkin here in Madrid, so this weekend I’ll be making my Grandma’s pumpkin pie recipe. This evening we went out for sushi to celebrate–we’re not really big on turkey.
But my big news for the holiday is that today I finally finished the book manuscript!…[Read more]

I hate my Rowenta, despite using it with a spray bottle and thus not having any leaking/spitting issues, because it sometimes gets so scorchingly hot that even linen immediately burns. My next iron will be a cheapie.
My own stuff is never ironed because I don’t care, my child’s always is because I do care, and my husband is so handsome I’ve…[Read more]

juliamom2009 replied to the topic Tunic: is the placket necessary? in the forum oliver + s: swingset 10 years ago
I just tested one on my kid – it slipped easily over her head without unbuttoning the back. It was a teeny bit of a wriggle pulling it down through the chest, however. I don’t know if that helps or not! Honestly, if I were sewing in a rush it would work without the placket…but if I were sewing for someone else’s child, I’d put it in.

Oh this has so many levels of smiles.
@ellenmcm and @dubhels2003, I walk around in wrinkled clothing and refuse to iron clothes except for the following: my daughter’s clothes that *I* made and anything my son needs for a photograph or concert. Otherwise, it is totally an instrument of feminine oppression. My husband asked me once to iron…[Read more]

McStitch has it right. The full-size page should be printed at 100%, no scaling, no “fit-to-page” — no nothing. Exactly as it is.
