This is my go to recipe for birthday cakes…
Annabel Langbein’s Ultimate Chocolate Cake
I always make the cake or cakes a few weeks in advance, wrap in cling film and then freeze until the day before. I’ve made this one in both 27cm (entire recipe) and 20cm (recipe split into thirds) tins. I’ve also staked two 27cm cakes, and you could…[Read more]

You know, I do have one huge chocolate cake recipe, but it’s for making a huge number of individual cakes (it’s a recipe for 75, from El Bulli). That make me wonder whether it wouldn’t be easiest to make one normal cake to decorate and put candles on, then make a huge number of cupcakes. Won’t have to fuss with handing out 200 plates and forks,…[Read more]

Hit me with your ‘big’ cake recipes, preferably something that will freeze.
I am considering making my sons 18th cake, possibly for up to 200 people. At the moment I am thinking I will make several and put them together on the night…. anyone here experienced with catering for a big crowd.
I am not after anything too fancy, just good honest…[Read more]

I have a nice weight, draped acrylic, in a beautiful southwest pattern. The pattern goes straight across, not on the diagonal. However, I’m wondering if it will work since solid colors seems to be the name of the game with this coat. I see one plaid in the sea of solids on the Pinterest board, so perhaps it can work. There’s quite a drop for…[Read more]

Right on, @lightningmcstitch! The drape is important for this one. The fabric can be relatively thick as long as it’s not too stiff. @Ginger, I’d suggest going to a fabric store and looking at the coatings section so you can see the type of fabric we’ve recommended for this pattern. That way you’ll know what to look for when you shop your stash!

@Ginger I think you’re exactly right to say “hold it up and see how it falls/drapes”. If it feels like it will be a nice warm layer and it drapes nicely then I think you’ve got your perfect fabric.
Here’s a picture of my mum and I both wearing the same cape pattern. I love the fabric I found for her one because of the gorgeous double face, but you…[Read more] -

I have no idea. I’ve never sewn wool before. Sorry… maybe someone else will jump on.

I’ve been sewing since I was a child. But have only made a handful of things out of wool. So I’m not very familiar with the different types. I have a few wools in my stash, that were given to me, so I don’t know what type they are. Any tips for determining if any of my gifted wools would work for this coat or not? Hold it up and see if it…[Read more]

May we ask questions about fabric or should we wait until the sew-along begins? Thanks so much.
