Well that’s good to know Ellen. I suppose a zig zag stitch kind of keeps the seam allowances together anyway. I was imagining a sleeve seam for example, if the seam allowances opened out and then curled a bit, it would take a lot of ironing for that to sit flat enough for my liking.
But then I did say I was fussy didn’t I. 🙂 -

Working on finishing my Girl Friday culottes! I put them on hold over Mother’s Day as my parents drove in to spend a few days. Then Olivia had her first birthday Friday and the sewing kept getting put off. I’m in the middle of inserting the zipper. I’m making them out of graphite kona cotton, since I’m not sure how this style will look on me and I…[Read more]

@roundtheworldgirl thanks! That looks doable and gives me food for thought.
Also meant to ask above, has anyone modified the Fairy Tale dress to have a basque waist? Since it’s the first pattern I thought of and all the Disney princesses have that pointed waistline 😉

I made my oldest another Cosi swimsuit but something went wrong and it’s a bit too short in the torso. Tonight I plan to chop it in half and turn it into a two piece.

It’s not the most accurate approach to a Sleeping Beauty dress, but I made my youngest daughter one for Christmas when she was 2.5. I used a peasant dress pattern (indietutes, I think), and just eyeballed the pieces for the skirt overlay, and then draped the ruff in tulle. You can see bad photos here and here.

My daughter is currently obsessed with Sleeping Beauty, so for her 3rd birthday this summer I’m thinking of sewing a princess dress for her. Any ideas on which patterns/alterations/hacks I could use? For the pink dress. I googled patterns but the only one I found is out of print and copies on eBay run $25-40. Plus I’d rather work with a pattern…[Read more]

After a pretty rough day yesterday with this nasty gastro bug, I managed to complete the little tiny bit of smocking and have blocked it and zigzaged to form the piece.
The aim today is to assembly line sew the tea party (outer) dress and the carousel dress, along with a pair of layette pants and to pleat another dress front so I can sit and…[Read more]

In my experience, finishing the seam on knits makes the seam stronger. If you have an overlocker/ serger, I would use this for all seams and then do the hems on the normal sewing machine if a coverstitch isn’t available.

Can you seam some scrap fabric and have her hold/rub it against her skin, maybe around the neck where the seams might be thickest? See which version feels nicest for her?

If you’re using a curly edge knit I wonder if it wouldn’t be worse to have the seam allowances raw…
Personally I can’t leave knits unfinished or unhenmed. Just me, but I strive for my homemade stuff to be worthy in craftmanship of shop bought, if not better.
But then I use an overlocker/serger for knit sewing, so my sewing and finishing is one…[Read more] -

Seam allowances are included.
In the written instructions it will tell you that they’re 1/2″ (as per every Oliver + S pattern.
Be aware that many of us find the hat runs small compared to the suggested age, but quite true to the measured size. Make sure you measure your kids noggin. If in any doubt I’d say go up a size. - Load More
