Masha Richart replied to the topic Any thoughts on the Sunday Brunch Jacket from flannel? in the forum oliver + s: sunday brunch 9 years ago
My only hesitation would be how the flannel itself would wear. I think it would sew up fine into the jacket, but I have yet to find a flannel that doesn’t fade and pill horribly after a few washes. I’d subject a sizable swatch to some rough treatment first.

Thanks LMcS! I do have the Woolly Nylon but have not been able to get it to work for me – maybe I should invest in another bobbin case. Cheaper than the coverstitch, anyway …

Ooh @vothgirl I love that! Thanks for the tip! I am going to try it out on my very next pair.
Side note – is anyone else having the same trouble as me with the forums? I still can’t start topics – at the bottom where the compose window usually is on the main forums page, it just says “you cannot create a topic.”

I wanted to start a new topic for this question, however, the forums are not allowing me to do that.
As my tall skinny girl grows even taller and skinnier, buying RTW pants and leggings has become entirely impossible. The poor child loves leggings and I sew them for her. But. I have a serger and a sewing machine and I have not been able to…[Read more]

I don’t sew as much for the kids as I used to but that is because things were not being appreciated/worn. So I cut back. But if they wore everything I made them I would probably sew more for them. And actually, as a result of my cutting back, they do seem to really appreciate when I make something. I just made each girl a spring/summer dress…[Read more]

Thanks to continuing insomnia, my sewing has been very productive. Tonight I finished the Art Museum trousers (just need to try them on the boy tomorrow and then I can install elastic and hem). Tonight I also made a new maternity tshirt by lengthening the Maria Denmark Kimono tee pattern. I came upstairs because it is nearly 1 a.m. but I don’t…[Read more]

I have been meaning to try carbon paper but haven’t done it yet. I do have a tracing wheel inherited from my grandmother and I find that for a lot of fabrics, I can just trace over the pattern onto the fabric, without any carbon paper or other ink-leaving device, and the divots left by the wheel are deep enough for me to see the line when I am…[Read more]

I’m so sorry to hear that Jay. My mother died of cancer last year and I did not make it home in time either. I felt very helpless and really devastated that I was not able to be there for her at the end. I hope your trip home and your visit to her family is able to provide some small measure of comfort. Hugs to you.

Iranian picnics sound much like Armenian picnics. Armenians (at least in Armenia, not sure whether they do this in Glendale too, perhaps you know?) go out into the woods and build a barbecue pit, then haul in the platters of skewered meat, herbs and vegetables (and lots of bread, no rice). And don’t forget the moonshine. Lots of moonshine.…[Read more]
