I think cotton jersey is great for polos and T-shirts, and I’m sure it will be fine here. This pattern doesn’t need a ton of stretch, especially with the woven details. So glad you’re joining us!

Liesl Gibson replied to the topic I *really* want to sew a tent/trapeze dress — which Liesl + Co or Lisette?? in the forum Sewing for Yourself 9 years ago
That’s a cute dress! I love Rachel Comey’s designs.
It’s difficult to see the details in the photos, but I’d tend to start with the Gallery Tunic if I was doing it. It’s the closest silhouette to this dress, but you’ll still need to do some work to get the right look. I hope it works and you keep us posted on your progress!

Liesl Gibson replied to the topic Making a sleeveless gallery tunic in the forum liesl + co: gallery tunic + dress 9 years ago
Typically a sleeveless pattern has a much higher armhole than a pattern with sleeves, so you’ll want to raise the armhole when you try this. You’ll probably also need to do a little work to eliminate gaping at the armhole, so I’d definitely recommend making a muslin if you’re going to try this. But if the pattern fits properly across the chest you…[Read more]

Liesl Gibson replied to the topic Waistband too short in the forum liesl + co: city stroll wrap skirt 9 years ago
Depending on your fabric, you may need to ease in the waist a bit to fit the waistband. To do this, you would just add a gathering stitch to the top edge of the skirt and pull up on the thread tails to cinch up the fabric a bit. Then you’ll just smooth the fabric so you don’t have any puckers before sewing it. Does that make sense?

I saw a blouse that reminded me of this style in Madewell yesterday. Now I want to make one for myself!

Liesl Gibson replied to the topic Pick stitching? in the forum oliver + s: art museum 9 years ago
Oh, ok. Well, a pick stitch is basically a backstitch that has lots of space between each stitch–it travels on the back side so you have long floats. (If that sounds like I’m speaking Martian, sorry.) I’ll definitely do a tutorial soon.
The vest looks great! Happy graduation!

Oh, I’d love to teach you how to do this and I’ve always meant to do a tutorial for it! Let me see if we can find time to do it in the next couple of weeks, ok? Or is that too late? I think I recall an article in Threads magazine years ago about it if you need it sooner. They were pick stitching a back zipper on a dress and adding beads to the…[Read more]

Liesl Gibson replied to the topic What do you think? Feedback welcome. in the forum Sewing for Yourself 9 years ago
Thanks, Sarvi and Cat! Courtney, the skirt is designed to sit at your natural waist, but it’s really a matter of your preference. Just like if you tried things on at a store, you get to decide how you want to wear your clothing. If you prefer it to sit a little lower, that’s up to you. Mine sits at my belly button or slightly lower, yes.

Hey all, I asked Todd to create this group so we’d have a place to easily discuss sewing for ourselves. So first question: feedback on the new Liesl + Co patterns? Are these styles you want to sew for yourself?

That’s a great idea, Brittney! That way you get the reminder that it’s been updated but it all stays in one place. Thanks for the suggestion. And I hope the flatlock works out! I think it’s nice to have that seam stitched down somehow, and the straight stitch works but the flatlock is fancier!

Yes, I was wondering about that myself. Rachel (@nestfullofeggs), maybe it’s better to add a new post for each day of the sew-along? I think the updates get lost otherwise. In other words, maybe each day of the sew-along should be a reply to the post instead of modifying the original post? Do you think that would be better, @georgeandizzy?

Liesl Gibson replied to the topic How thin is too thin for knits? in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 9 years ago
Even with the right fiber content, different knit qualities will feel and drape differently, so there’s no simple answer to this. Unfortunately. You really just have to feel them!

How is this format working for everyone? We thought it would be nice to give the sew-alongs a home where they’ll be easy to find, especially if you have questions about the pattern. Plus, it frees up the blog for other exciting things!

Hey all, I just sewed my first entredeux and was SHOCKED at how easy it was! I’ll do a little tutorial for the Butterfly Dress sew-along. I was thinking I’d do a little pintucking tutorial, too, using a double needle and a pintucking foot. All these new (to me) techniques! Very fun, and so much simpler than I expected.
-
What? You are kidding right? They are so simple you are right but you know I thought the same when I first tried them. They are such pretty techniques. I am very glad there are tutorials coming about them all. But, I thought the butterfly was a top?
-
Ack, yes, the Butterfly Top! No idea why I said dress. In any case, I love these techniques.
