Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoYeah, I kind of realized it was a huge question. However, thanks for pointing me to some good resources. I will just have to keep a running list of types as I peruse blog posts, pictures, etc. I wish one could find more stores that sold apparel fabrics (and decent ones).

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoThis is a pretty big topic and more than I can address in a quick reply. However, I did do an introduction to some basic garment fabrics in a CreativeBug class if you’re interested: https://www.creativebug.com/classseries/single/fabrics-101
I think if you look back at previous blog posts you’ll be able to gather a lot of information as well. Try…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoI am looking at sewing some shirts/blouses for myself. I would like to sew in fabrics that have a nice drape. 1) What are these fabrics? 2) What are the nicer fabrics to work with? 3) Are there any tips (previous posts?) for working with slippery fabric?
Also, I buy my fabric exclusively online since I am not happy with the quality at the…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 10 years agoI’m cautious about bra straps at work, but not at home. Spaghetti straps and racer backs are both pretty casual for me.

Sewing for Yourself 10 years agoHello Maria:
I live relatively close to Rochester, MN and have heard nothing but good things about Ginny’s Fine Fabrics, located at 211 South Broadway Street. I personally haven’t visited as just having discovered the place existed. But it sounds like it could be a garment sewers dream of fine wools, silks, cottons and linens. I hear the…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 10 years agoIs there a particular Lisette fabric you’re looking for? I’m not sure if you’re looking for the ones sold originally at JoAnn Fabric, which I think are out of stock, or the most recent collection, Woodland Clearing, which is not part of the Lisette line (but in my opinion has a nicer feel to it, I have tried both).
If it were me, I would do my…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 10 years agoI will be traveling to USA in a couple of weeks, and I would love to buy some Lisette fabric plus some good cotton knits. It’s a business travel and it will be hard to find much time for browsing, so I would really appreciate some help. I will stay one day in Rochester, Mn, one day in Chicago, one day in Boston and two or three days in NY.
Any…[Read more] -

Sewing for Yourself 10 years agoI’m another no-intentional-bra-strapper, and while I keep meaning to buy a different style of bra that will allow me to wear a racerback style (which I actually find very comfortable as well as liking how it looks) I somehow have never gotten around to it, which probably reveals something.

Sewing for Yourself 10 years agoI love racer backs, all my favorite tops and dresses have them. I find that if I situate my straps appropriately they barely show, but I wouldn’t care if they did. I do have a little clip thingy that hooks on the straps between the shoulder blades for fancier affairs at which visible straps might be a faux pas.
