    Hi there!

My partner is a perfect size Large, except for his neck which needs the collar lengthened by at least two inches. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to make this happen? I’m fairly confident I can grade up the collar/stand pieces themselves, but where else do I adjust the pattern? If I add an inch to both of the center front seams, I’ll be adding extra room he doesn’t need in the torso, and lowering the neckline would mean the collar might sit too low on him. Any advice would be much appreciated!

    cheers,
    v

    Hi Veronica,

Sorry for the silence; we’ve been laid low with the flu! In general, a longer collar band will mean lowering the neckline, but I would suggest marking the desired neckline on your muslin and measuring that first. You can probably use the collar band and collar from a different size once you know the length of the the neckline itself. Does that make sense?

I have no advice, but my husband has exactly the same issue and as a result all of his RTW shirts are too big on his torso. So if you have success with the modification I’d love to hear about it!

Hi, Liesl! Thank you so much for responding. I do hope you are feeling better!

Enbee, what I ended up doing was lowering the neckline by 1/8″ (essentially moving the seam line down to the 5/8″ mark”) which added an extra inch to the neck. I also added an inch to both front pieces at the center front, so that they actually overlapped. Since I had already cut out the collar/band patterns at the incorrect size I added 1 1/2″ at the center fold on the fold (so 3 total). I did end up taking a little bit of bagginess out of the side seams, but overall everything worked out great and the fit is perfect! Looking forward to cranking out more of these now that the headache of adjustments is complete! Hope you find the right fixes as well!

Cheers and Happy New Years to you both!

Glad it worked out! I’ve adjusted the neckline for friends by lowering as well and it’s worked out just fine. Happy New Year!
