We have just rolled out a new feature in the forums: custom discussion groups.
You can use the widget in the left-side navigation bar to view groups that have been created or to create your own group. Groups can be created as a place for hosting discussions that may not be directly related to sewing with a particular pattern. For example, there is currently a discussion topic called Fiber Club. This would be a great topic for a group.
A group allows you to post status updates related to the group and to create full, multiple discussion threads so that you could have discussion topics for brands of fiber, fiber projects, questions about a project, etc. This basically replicates the full functionality of the discussion forums but in a micro-encapsulated environment within the discussion forums.
Groups can be either public or private, so if you and friends have a particular topic you would like to discuss in private, you can do that through a private group that is invitation-only.
