cutting out the drawstring

I have a question as to which direction to layout the drawstring piece before cutting it out.

The layout diagram shows the drawstring piece situated along the crosswise grain of the fabric (with the long edges of the piece parallel to the cut edges). However, the grain arrow on the pattern piece (which I always assumed meant the lengthwise grain) runs from short end (of the pattern piece)to short end, which to me would indicate it would need to be parallel to the selvedge edge. Does that make sense?

Or does it really matter which direction it is cut out?

I’m a bit timid lately about grain line matters.

Hmmm, I never noticed that the grain line was incorrect. Thanks for pointing that out! Really, you could cut it either way. As long as it’s on one grain line (cross- or length-wise) it won’t matter. In truth, you could also cut it on bias, but then it would be a little stretchy!

Thanks so much for letting me know. I’ll go cut it out now!
