My son indicated that he wanted some pants like mama’s aka jeans. What O + S pattern eould be best for denim? I have all pants patterns except Art Museum and the sailor-type ones. He’s 2, fyi.

I’ve sewn the sandbox and after school pants in denim several times and have been happy with the results. Nicole has altered the sketchbook shorts to pants and has done a bang up job of owning that pattern. Search “sketchbook” on her blog and you’ll be in for a treat.

I recently used the Sketchbook for jeans for my daughter: https://www.flickr.com/photos/79480359@N03/14699004800/
And After School for my son:https://www.flickr.com/photos/79480359@N03/8668350104/
But my all time favourites were made by mixing the After School back with a modified Field Trip front: https://www.flickr.com/photos/79480359@N03/10146999943/
(or Titchy Threads make a jeans pattern that seems very popular. No changing required)10 years ago LINKchicmamainedh @chicmamainedh
I haven’t tried it, but the sailboat sounds cute for a 2 year old.

The Afterschool ones are super cute. I think that’s the look I am going for. Will try it and report back.
Now to find some denim that’s not too stiff for an active little boy…maybe some stretch!

@sayiamyou I LOVED those red skinny Sketchbook jeans of Nicole’s. They’re soooooo good.
I think almost any pattern can look jeans-ish if you use denim, an appropriate topstitching colour and do something jeans-esque to the back pocket. At least that’s my theory.
I was thinking maybe back pocket decoration might be a good idea for an Oliver + S blog post….10 years ago LINKwith love Heidi @with love Heidi

Awww, thank you Melani and Shelley.
I agree, I think denim maketh the jeans, not just the pattern.10 years ago LINK

I agree, the denim makes the pattern. Though, I think the Art Museum with maybe a different back pocket would work well. You could easily change up the pocket to be more ‘jean like’ and add some neat topstitching.
I have made the Titchy Thread pattern 7 times now with mixed results depending on the kid and size, stick with O+S;)

Fabric.com has good options if you don’t have a fabric store close by that carries denim (and I’ve been happy with all the ones I’ve purchased from them). 6 – 6.5 oz with a little stretch has been great for our early spring and early fall temps, and the 8 – 8.5 oz with a little stretch is good for our colder weather.

My fave is the After School pants pattern because my daughter is a skinny string bean. They make really cute jeans and have a slim fit.

I’ve used this one multiple times and always LOVE it. It holds up great! It does, however, shrink a lot. It needs more than a single pre-wash.

Oooh, love that railroad denim! My little guy loves trains too, so bonus. I may need to do a fabric.com order…
I traced my After School pattern today in 2T; won’t have a chance to get fabric or sew until after spring break/Easter week, but at least I got the finicky part done.
