Each year we go to the 50s Fair at Rose Seidler House in Sydney. Last year we won the family section in the fashion parade, so it’s worth putting in the effort. I enjoy making the outfits, and we have a great weekend away.

This year we are doing a “Family Day out at the Country Races” theme. I am going to make this for Audrey https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/163621067/1950s-girls-party-dress-jumper-pattern?ref=sr_gallery_2&ga_search_query=1950s+girls+dress+size+3&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery The underdress will be white dotted swiss, and the overdress in black velvet.

Josephine will be wearing a white knitted set and be in the vintage style pram. Chris I am hoping to put in black pleat front trousers and a white shirt with the sleeves folded up, with either button on braces, or a waistcoat, and a panama hat. Binoculars as an accessory.

My outfit is the challenge. I have a pale gold taffeta dress with black flock polka dots, that has a halter neck and circular skirt, that I used to wear dancing, I made a matching jacket for it, and wore it to Oaks Day a few years ago. I also have a second slightly smaller dress with a stain on the skirt from the same fabric. I thought this dress would be good because with the halter neck I can breastfeed fairly easily. Unfortunately, I tried on the dress and jacket last night and my post baby body is FAR from being able to fit into it. I have about 10cm in between the sides of the zip, and a similar gap at the front of the jacket.

I am thinking I can make a new bodice from leftover fabric, and skirt from the second dress, but I’m after suggestions for a bodice that is bra friendly, and looks suitable for the 1950s races. With a full circle skirt to play with, I have enough fabric to do most things. I can either wear the jacket as is (but take off the frog closure), or get a black cardigan to wear instead.

    Suggestions please šŸ™‚

Not my area of expertise but put Julia Bobbin into your search engine as she is the queen of self sewing 50’s style, you may find her via handmakersfactory.com I’m sure you’ll find pattern inspiration via her blog.

Thanks Lightning, she’s inspirational! My vintage wardrobe went out the window when I was pregnant with Audrey. I wore 1940s style for about 3 years.

I have made a decision, I’ve bought this pattern: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mysweetiepiepie_vintage/3464805251/ and I’m going to have a play with making the front so it opens for BF. Now I just need to wait for it to arrive from the US.

Looks like all I can work on now is my hat šŸ˜€

Country Road make a lovely fitted waist cardy, they pop up frequently on eBay. They would have a 50’s feel but still enable you to feed.

Thanks Nicole, I’ll have a look, but wait to buy until I finish the dress, I suspect the jacket neckline will fit under the new portrait collar of the dress.

I know exactly what pattern you need! I made my Easter dress using it a few years ago.

You can unbutton to breastfeed, adjust the gathers for your bust and, well, it’s just beautiful on.

Thanks Jenni, I already ordered a pattern, but that looks like a lovely pattern to make for next summer!

Jay, I have dress that may suit your daughter, it doesn’t fit Tildy anymore https://www.flickr.com/photos/motherof5/12691114065/in/set-72157640018176946

Oh, thank you Nicole, that’s very thoughtful – and such a cute dress! I think it will be way too big for Audrey though – she’s only a size 2.

No worries Jay, it is a size 2 though, Matilda is tiny.

Let me now if you fancy it for another event, I warn you, it takes an age to iron šŸ™‚

Nicole – thank you, I missed this! That’s very kind of you, but half the fun of the event is making the outfits. You can save it for Beatrix now!

We went to the Fifties Fair yesterday – and won the Family category again. I haven’t got individual photos of what we wore yet, but here’s a group shot http://www.theage.com.au/photogallery/national/fifties-fair-at-rose-seidler-house-20140824-3e83w.html

I did get everything finished – except the hat I intended to make for myself. I wore my 40s hat instead, as it matched perfectly.

Audrey was so tired, she fell asleep in the car on the way home (after 3 hours of chatter from the back seat, with half an hour to go) and we couldn’t wake her up for dinner, so I put her in PJs while she was asleep, and she didn’t wake up until 6 this morning. 12 hours sleep!

Oops, the link doesn’t link to the right photo.

    Maybe this will work… http://www.theage.com.au/photogallery/national/fifties-fair-at-rose-seidler-house-20140824-3e83w.html?selectedImage=5

It’s image 5 in that gallery if the new link doesn’t work either.
