fabric source feature: maaidesign

Now that JoAnn Stores is no longer with us (RIP), it’s become much more challenging for many sewists to find good fabrics. For that reason I’ve created our Fabric Source list, to help you find good online fabric stores. But on-line shopping is tricky, too, because you can’t actually touch the fabrics to evaluate them. To that end, we’re adding another little feature here. Every few weeks we’ll introduce you to a wonderful fabric store and feature a few of their fabrics, combined with recommendations for some of our sewing patterns to help you choose the appropriate fabrics for your sewing projects. This way you can meet the shop and the owner(s) behind them, see some of the terrific fabrics they carry, and get their suggestions for pairing fabrics with of our sewing patterns. I hope this will help you to find new fabrics and fabric stores!

To get started, I’m pleased to introduce you to Maaidesign, which is located in Australia. Maaike, the owner, contacted me a few months ago for an interview for Modern Makers, her online community, and I enjoyed getting to know her so much that I thought you would like to meet her, too! So here she is with some of the wonderful fabrics she carries and how she suggests that you pair them with our patterns.

Stay tuned for many more on-line fabric shops, too!

Maaidesign ships worldwide except to the USA (temporarily).

It’s a warm, welcoming space where we host masterclasses, virtual events, and gentle sewing challenges that help members try something new and stay inspired.

For really long lasting pants, a cotton lyocell drill is a great pick that would work well with the Montauk Trousers. (Check out the Golden Glow color–so pretty!)

  1. My kids and I have been fortunate to have worn Maaidesign fabrics from as far back as 2015 and I always try and catch up with Maaike (and try to convince her to come out on the mountain bike trails) whenever I’m in her town.

    1. I love that! Thanks, Shelley!
