Oh…thank you. 1/2″ seems quite sensible!

Hi Cindy, the seam allowance is there on Page 2 of the Instructions: General Instructions, point 4: “Seam allowances are included in the pattern and are 1/2″ unless otherwise noted”.
All of the Oliver + S an dLiesl+ Co patterns tend to work with 1/2″ seam allowances, the main exception being knit garments which may have a 1/4″ seam allowance.…[Read more]

Follow up question…I have read through the instructions and don’t see anything about the seam allowance. In the old days when I was making garments, the seam allowance was 5/8″. Is that the seam allowance that is supposed to be used on this garment? I am so used to using 1/4″ seams for quilts! I don’t want to screw up!!!

Hi Liesl,
I am attempting to put a photo here. My husband and I have both tried in the past to no avail so here goes another attempt.
This time I am taking the photo at the time rather than choosing from my photo library and it looks like it might work.
Anyway, here is my bodice with the altered neckline about which I wrote to you a week or so ago. -

My understanding was that you’re sewing the Woodland Stroll Cape?

Ok, thanks! I’ll proceed on my adventure here.

Hummm…I thought I might but it’s and “odd “ dress a Macy Tilden pattern that has unusual pieces all over the place. Would it still be ok to “flip” it? Thanks For answering my questions and not making me feel silly.

You can use a lining instead of a facing. That’s perfectly fine. I’m not following exactly what you’re trying to do with two bodice pieces, but it sounds like that’s not important here. Yes, just line it instead of a facing. No problem.

Can’t you just flip it and use the right side? Everything is symmetrical, so just mark the wrong side so you keep it all straight.

Thank you @liesl! I feel as though you may be right with simpler being better! I’m going to try a C cup in Size 8 with the shoulders broadened again. Knowing it’s supposed to have a slightly dropped shoulder is helpful. I’ll let you know how it turns out in a couple of days. Thank you!!!

Hi,
I’ve done something silly. I have a pretty fabric that’s hard to tell the wrong and right side of. And yes, I’ve cut it out on the wrong side! Ekkkk!!!! Can I still use it? -

Ok, here’s some quick feedback! A couple of things to keep in mind here and with some of the shirts in your closet: this style of shirt is not a fitted blouse. It’s meant to be somewhat loose-fitting with a slightly dropped shoulder. In other words, I think you might be trying to make a fitted blouse with a shirt that’s designed to be more…[Read more]

Thanks for responding. Ok. I’ll try to describe my situation better. I am combining a lot of new to me techniques after making one basic dress. Maybe not advisable!
I am making a dress similar the one on 117 with the squared neckline using the basic bodice design. I am thinking I will treat it as a color blocking situation creating two pieces f…[Read more] -

Thanks for your tips, Liesl! They helped a lot. I went ahead a made a muslin first, and just in case anyone in the future searches for this (also me, for when I forget, haha), I stitched the zipper to the outer fabric, just like you said, leaving a half inch at the top and sides (I trimmed half and inch from each back piece, after rereading the…[Read more]

Hi Everyone, thank you in advance for your help!
I’m on my third muslin now for the classic shirt and I’d love some input before I go any further. I’m relatively new to sewing and pattern adjustments, but have taken a few pattern alteration courses this fall so if I only know which adjustments I need then I think I can make it work on the patte…[Read more] -

Nancy, I’m really sorry but I’m not understanding your question(s). Can you re-ask it/them or maybe post a photo of what you’re trying to do?
-
Nancy replied to the topic Building block dress in the forum oliver + s: building block dress 6 years ago
Sorry, I made a mistake in the above post. I see that one of the dress variations has a shaped neckline on the bodice only. (I was rushing!)
I still have the question.
Or do I just split the bodice into two pieces…add seam allowances and cut the top one out of the polka dot fabric and the lower one out of the main fabric? -

Question 1
I’m attempting my second Building Block dress. Maybe I’m in a little over my head here! But I was planning to make the neck line like the dress on page 117. But now I see that the pictures of a shaped neckline in the first part of the book only show the skirt extending from the neckline down to knee length instead of just going to the…[Read more] - Load More
