I live in northern CA! And yeah, it probably will be a bit chilly near the Pacific in the evening, it always is.
Bistro dress came to mind first. But maybe the new Lisette pants pattern in linen, and a floral, or brightly colored fabric for the blouse would be more comfortable, and some pretty sandals. Or maybe some linen girl Friday culottes…[Read more] -

Haha, all right, now we’re talking! I think I still have the selvedge from some Armani cashmere coating around here somewhere. Like Nicole said, the only thing worse at that price than buying too much is buying too little. Cashmere coat with the grain going the wrong way on the collar because I tried to be clever — now that would not be cute.…[Read more]

That’s exactly the thread I was thinking of Nicole, thank you!

I’ve been eyeing some Lana Canberra at purl soho to use up a GC, and at 95/yd and living in San Diego don’t want too much leftover 😛
I’m a bit of a fabric Scrooge as well and have never used full yardage for an o+S pattern myself, but I so appreciate that it is there. I have found all the responses fascinating and did end up purchasing a digital…[Read more]

What on earth are you guys sewing with that a third of a yard is so high-stakes? If somebody has a line to cashmere and is holding out I’m going to be furious.

Thank you for the insight, Todd. You always give interesting and useful details. And I’m glad you commented regarding price and quality, especially in reference to digital patterns. Of course the O+S brand signifies quality, and I would expect nothing less from your digital prints, which is why I have never minded paying a comparable price for…[Read more]

Thanks for the heads up! That would be worth a quick trip over the bridge.
Joann’s sale price is usually $1-$2. I know that’s a bargain to those overseas!
@mkhs, marine blue linen sounds stunning!

I’m sorry, but tights and boots in early May? That seems very strange to me. That’s a fall outfit and would look really weird in May, the epitome of a spring month. It’s a spring wedding and you should wear a lovely spring dress! Even if you do need a pashmina or cardigan. Bistro would be a nice choice, whatever the sleeve length. You could…[Read more]

I’ve never used the full yardage listed on an Oliver and S pattern, I have to say. BUT, I seem to have inherited a seriously depression era fabric scrooge ability from my grandmother. 🙂 I would take your challenge, @Todd. Computer software is only as smart as the person who programmed it. Computers lack the ability to problem solve and are not…[Read more]

I just discovered that using emoticons (required if you’re picking a friendly fight with admin)causes some kind of break and only the comment up to that point gets published.
Doesn’t matter ’cause we still have colons and brackets, but the newer prefabricated emoticons don’t work.

@Todd from the safety of the other side of the Pacific I’m flapping your computer with my glove and picking a fight! 🙂
Seriously, I’m sure I would be punching above my weight but wouldn’t it be fun to try. I was thinking more along the lines of Kasparov vs Deep Blue. Wikipedia tells me Kasparov is still alive so I like my comparison better!
I…[Read more] -

Oh yes @lightningmcstitch, it’s all about fabric width. If you find something that’s wider than what’s specified, you can change the layout and perhaps use less fabric.
But can you really beat the computer? It would be an interesting John Henry vs. the steam hammer challenge to pit you against our computer if we have the width of your fabric and…[Read more]

Try a pair of eyebrow tweezers. I have some long handled surgical forceps that are perfect for this kind of thing.
